Live music preview: Juneteenth Vancerts show Saturday with Tribe Mafia at Native

Austin hip-hop duo Tribe Mafia are set to headline an impressive Juneteenth bill for Sunset Saturdays by Vancerts and Fistful of Bourbon at Native Hostel this Saturday. The event begins at 6 p.m. (instead of 5 p.m.) inside Native so fans won’t wilt in the midst of hot, summer weather already upon us in Central Texas. Rounding out the talent roster are David Shabani and Temple native turned East Austinite, Pat G. Advance tickets that are regularly $20 at Native have been priced at $10 for for local hip-hop enthusiasts. The lineup promises an exceptional evening of great  performances.

Tribe Mafia’s rather considerable social following is likely the result of the duo both putting out music like 2019 collaborative single, “Like Cola” from their EP It’s a Tribe Tings with Mikey See. From there, the band was invited to be tour opener for well-known Senegalese-American, hip-hop artist, Akon. The track has a laid-back, good time summer vibes feel. You can hear below:

David Shabani is an Austin-based hip-hop artist with high potential. Most Austin music fans don’t realize how robust the rap scene is with so many other genres getting attention. But Shabani fits that description. Shabani’s slow-roll, chill delivery sounds like the perfect antidote to the hot, sweaty summer we’re just beginning. Artists like Shabani highlight the diverse styles of hip-hop and rap being presented out of the underestimated Austin hip-hop scene. Check his dope track, “Globetrotter” via YouTube:

Vancerts’ opener for the Junteeenth celebration Saturday evening is Pat G who grew up in nearby Temple and graduated from Huston-Tillotson College, the well-regarded historically black college situated in the center of the neighborhood off East Seventh Street. Not only is Pat a great rapper, his music reflects his humble, hometown values. Listening to Pat G means hearing messages of optimism, hope and empowering messages to listeners like this song, “W.I.T. (Whatever It Takes).” Pat G is honestly a breath of fresh air amid rap songs glorifying gratuitous sex and violence.
