Live music preview: Sagebrush to host SIMS benefit Saturday with Croy and the Boys

This Saturday at Austin honky tonk, Sagebrush, Croy and the Boys will perform with Soulman Sam, Danny B Harvey and The Tender Things to benefit SIMS Foundation. Music will kick off at 5 p.m. with Soulman Sam who had a line out the door at Sagebrush the last time the veteran soul and blues singer played the venue. Tickets will be available at the door for $10 with a portion of the proceeds going directly to SIMS Foundation. RSVP on Facebook here.

If you don’t already know what SIMS does, the mental health organization provides mental health and addiction services to Austin music industry members and their dependent families. While the demand for services has steadily increased in Austin, the local non-profit has designs on taking the organization national. Events like Saturday’s Sagebrush lineup help support those efforts. The vast majority of donated funds go directly to SIMS clients.

Sagebrush will be raffling off a $2000 guitar case from Calton Cases. Additionally, the venue will host a musicians art party out back in the sprawling 1.5 acres out back of the dance hall. All art for sale at the event is made by working musicians. The raffle will benefit SIMS Foundation.

Sagebrush owner, Denis O’Donnell not only jumped at the chance to host a SIMS benefit, he also worked with Nine Banded Whiskey to concoct a special frozen lemonade drink just for Saturday’s event. All proceeds of the cocktail will be donated to SIMS Foundation.

Besides getting to see Soulman Sam kick off the festivities at Sagebrush, music fans will get to see the country humor of bandleader Corey Baum whose backing band, The Boys are crack musicians including drummer Casey Seymour who is also an Advisory Board member at SIMS after being a client. Seymour credits the help he got from SIMS as a big reason he was able to release a solo record this year after years of sitting on the project.

Check out this live clip of Baum and the Boys singing “I’m Broke.” The song not only highlights Baum’s wry sense of humor, but also shows how deft Baum and his band are at delivering an authentic country sound with the gags built-in in an ironic manner. The singer’s rich tenor rings out over the music perfectly.

Danny B. Harvey is a favorite of Sagebrush’s owner and booker, O’Donnell. He thought Harvey would make a perfect addition to this mostly country-themed bill and he is correct of course. We’re looking forward to catching our first Danny B set at the Sagebrush Friday.

Finally, for all you night owls, The Tender Things featuring Jesse Ebaugh will round out the late-night portion of the bill. The former Heartless Bastards bassist has officially left the band after years of touring with the local hit-makers to pursue his own project which The Austin Chronicle’s Kevin Curtin described as “hippie country.” We’ll let y’all decide for yourself what to call it. All we know is that it’s pretty damn good music. The song is the title track from the group’s February 2020 release on Spaceflight Records.

We look forward to seeing you Saturday at the Sagebrush SIMS benefit.
