Founder’s Corner: Mike Cosmic tells readers why they need to hear Prom Threat
Been itching to tell you about a little three piece band called Prom Threat that I know well. The three-piece formed in Austin fires like a V8 engine. They’re part Riot Grrl, part shy girl, all kick-ass post-punk act. Prom Threat is the brain child of punk rocker Anna Sawyer. Her off-stage demeanor transforms when her band hits the stage. The transformation embodies flawless punk rock energy that has been pent up deep inside her petite frame. Each breath, every note, all the feelings drawn onto a dynamic sonic canvas with aural symmetry. Prom Threat is like a VW Bug that turns into a semi-truck, splattering buckets of sound into art. It goes without saying, Prom Threat is one of my favorite bands.
Sawyer’s project has gone through several lineup changes. Each iteration has been nothing short of magnificent. The singer and guitarist surrounds herself with talented musicians and close friends who elevate her vision, each bringing their own touch of brilliance to the group. The decade-long hustle has borne ripe fruit yielding an impressive discography and countless wild shows, stretching from their 2016 debut EP all the way to their latest 2026 single, “It’s Past 2 a.m.”
Their latest track, “It’s Past 2 AM,” is a ballad that offers a perfect glimpse into the band’s style. Grounded in introspective lyrics like “Your time is running out, oh, that’s what they all say / You’ve let it all dry up, you let it slip away,” the song questions life decisions and asks how one ends up where they are. The music perfectly matches the intensity of the subject matter. The track’s start may be soft but the ends in angst! You can listen to this track and their entire discography on Bandcamp.
While this story may be the first you’ve heard of Sawyer and Prom Threat, she’s no underdog; She may look unassuming but once her band takes the stage, they completely kill it. The band’s powerhouse current lineup features heavy-hitting drummer Valdemar Barrera (Semihelix, Bird Casino) and the badass Natalie on bass.
