Song Premiere: Austin heavy psych duo Floating Cube introduces single Canyon

One of Austin‘s hottest new bands, heavy psych duo, Floating Cube, is set to release their debut self titled EP on July 25 and has asked The Cosmic Clash to preview the first single, “Canyon” ahead of the song’s official release on July 18 at their upcoming show at The 13th Floor during the annual Hot Summer Nights which offers free cover at multiple Red River venues all weekend.

Floating Cube is comprised of Jake Stuart (baritone guitar) and Carisa Giard (drums), both having a long-term presence in the Austin music scene with several acts including; Tearjerk, The Stargazer Lillies, Peyote Coyote, and Sailor Poon. For their latest project, the duo decided to go into a heavier direction sonically, mixing elements of shoegaze, jazz, stoner rock. doom metal, psychedelia and even surf rock into the mix.

FLOATING CUBE “Cany0n”

First single, “Canyon” immediately hits you right in the gut, it’s alchemy of fuzzed out, crunchy riffs and ear pounding percussion takes you on a sonic journey while riding on an undeniable hook. The track slowly builds into a volcanic wall of sound until it is suddenly met with the spacey sax of of virtuoso John Morgan, bringing the song to a satisfying finale. This is the kind of music quality headphones were made for.

The track was recorded and mixed by the band in the recording studio at SpaceATX in South Austin. “We weren’t quite sure what direction to go production-wise, so we just started working on the songs and let them breathe and evolve naturally. We did a ton of experimenting and spent a while just dialing in sounds,” says drummer Cari G about the recording process. The band also owes an element of their sound to their self-made guitar effects pedals, which are featured on the album and is employed during their live performances.

Floating Cube drums Floating Cube will be celebrating the release of their full EP with a release party at Hotel Vegas on July 25 with support from local favorites, Queen Serene and CorMae. There will be physical copies of the EP available on limited edition cassettes as well as a square shaped 7”vinyl of the “Canyon” single.
