Single review: Wild Heaven’s “One To Go” Is a Slow Burn With Teeth
Who said lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place? We have once again been given the privilege of previewing the newest single from one of Austin’s most exciting bands, Wild Heaven, before its official release on September 10th.
The new single is called “One To Go” and it is fierce.
Bassist Aja Pollock takes the lead singing on this one and it’s a slow burn. The song begins with a continuous bass line alone in the darkness until it is met by the determined drumming of Andi LaGrone, matching it in intensity. Laura Blewitt and Blake Bowles enter the fray with shimmering guitar riffs that grow sharper as the song builds in momentum. As the song reaches its epiphany, it suddenly explodes into a chaotic swirl of brain-melting guitars and multi-layered vocals, each vying for dominance, before the most forceful voice takes back control and brings the song to a satisfying conclusion.
Aja had this to say about the genesis of the song:
“One to Go” is a snapshot of the inside of my head at a moment when I was struggling to turn down the noise and listen to myself. There are so many things trying to influence and control us—big things like media and most of the online world, but also things like other people’s image of us or expectations of us. It became this accumulating chatter getting louder and louder in my mind, clawing its way back in every time I managed to quiet it down.”
“Musically, the song started with the main guitar riff; I got a little obsessed with it, but I couldn’t figure out what to do with it. Once I came up with the circular bass line, it finally clicked. The outro is probably my favorite part; Blake and Laura’s swooping layered guitars sound amazing, and I got to sing some lines through an actual megaphone, courtesy of studio wizard Matt Parmenter at Ice Cream Factory. I love that final swell of chaos in the song.”
“One To Go” is set to be released this Thursday 9/10 on all digital platforms.
Luli Presents will be hosting Wild Heaven’s single-release show the same day at Chess Club. They will be supported by Social Dissonance, Mad Whit and Maiden Mother Crone. It’s a stellar lineup of local music that shouldn’t be missed.
