Song premiere: Austin music scene veterans Mean Jolene drop single Private Plane today
Veteran Austin power-pop and garage-rockers, Mean Jolene release a new single “Private Plane” today. The track is on their up and coming third studio album, Play Nice, recorded and mixed at Estuary Recording with John Michael Landon. The song’s theme “fantasizes about a return to innocence — reflecting on escapism as a form of self-preservation and how this can directly conflict with the desire to grow and overcome adversity.”

A fixture of the Austin music scene for over a decade, Mean Jolene was founded in 2015 by Jolie Cota Flink and Adam Sharp. The band’s current powerhouse lineup features songwriter and vocalist Cota Flink, rhythm guitarist Ali Ditto, bassist Maud Morgan, lead guitarist Jen Brown, and drummer Philip Dunne who continue to push boundaries. Their discography includes acclaimed back-to-back albums, Salty (2016) and Try Harder (2019). Both were released on ATH Records. These albums perfectly capture a signature blend of 60s-inspired power-pop and garage rock, while their high-energy live performances translate the raw emotion of each note directly to the audience.

“Private Plane” is a new addition to their catalog, honoring the band’s signature roots while embracing their musical evolution. The track pops into existence as drummer Philip Dunne sharply hits the snare with a one-two punch followed by a slightly distorted mid-tempo rhythm guitar. The production feels authentic, capturing the raw, overdriven character of the amplifiers just enough to give the song its necessary edge. The string bending chords of the backing guitars stand out along with leads adding texture to the song. The bass carries the track further, adding full flavor and depth. The arrangement allows Jolie Cota Flink to standout with her soothing laid-back vocal delivery, while backing vocals lend the song a distinct 60s doo-wop vibe. The song expresses an open feeling as if cruising on air. It should make fans excited for their next studio album Play Nice! set to be released this Fall.
