Live music preview: Marcus Rezak returns to Austin with Truth in Sound

Denver-based guitarist, Marcus Rezak returns to Austin this evening in support of his second EP, Truth in Sound at Empire Control Room and Garage with percussionist, Nikki Glaspie of Nth Power on drums, Chantil Dukart on keys and Tim Philpott on bass. EP features Russ Lawton, Ray Paczkowski, and the late Tony Markellis of Trey Anastasio Band and Kalyan Pathak on percussion and tabla. Rezak appears at Rancho Relaxo Saturday evening with his high-octane Grateful Dead cover band, Shred is Dead to celebrate Jerry Garcia’s birthday with the Rancho crew to complete the one-two, Austin punch. Tickets to tonight’s show can be purchased in advance here.

Rezak kicked off the summer with an east coast tour and is coming off a headlining performance at Denver’s Levitt Pavillion.  The Austin shows come ahead of another east coast jaunt and appearances at Summer Camp Music Festival in Chillicothe, IL and Deadwood Jam in Deadwood, SD. This summer alone, Rezak has shared the stage with John Morgan Kimock, Zach Nugent, Todd Stoops, Adrian Tramotano, Jay Burwick, Ryan Dempsey, and more.

The new record has been extremely well received. Recorded in Burlington, Vermont where Phish cut their teeth, Rezak has made a great little record.

Perhaps the now deceased Markelis put it best, “It’s always good to break new ground in the music world—whether it’s hearing something new and different, or whether it’s a chance encounter with players you’ve heard about but never met, or, as in this case, getting invited by a seriously talented young musician to help him realize the dream of putting some top-notch original music out for the world to hear. Add to that the pleasure of getting to record those songs with some of my favorite musicians—my friends and TAB band mates Russ and Ray—under the watchful eye of Ben Collette at Burlington’s Tank Studio, and it just doesn’t get any better. I wish Marcus all the success he deserves!” – Tony Markellis, bass (Trey Anastasio Band)
