Album review: The Oxys to drop hard hitting new album Generation Irrelevant July 21

The Oxys, comprised of guitarist Jason “Ginchy” Kottwitz (Dead Boys, Sylvain Sylvain and The Sylvains) and Vocalist “PunkRockPhil” Davis is a rambunctious punk rock band from Austin, will release their second album titled Generation Irrelevant on the label Dead Beat Records imprint on July 21 along with an album release show at Valhalla. This sophomore effort is packed with a traditional power-punk sound that possesses the raw energy to potentially bring down brick walls when played at high volumes. Generation Irrelevant will undoubtedly ignite a fiery response from listeners, inspiring them to unleash their frustrations by releasing pent-up aggression while simultaneously raising their fists in rebellious solidarity.

The opening track of Generation Irrelevant, “Ticking Timebomb” delivers an unapologetic punch straight to your face.”PunkRockPhil” Davis leads the charge, passionately spewing his sermon with lyrics that impart a looming disaster:

“Can’t feel your impending doom, watching you sink into your tomb, accusations and jealousies, forget the attacks, we’re just enemies.”

The anthem is elevated by the backing vocal “whoas!” that add to its rebellious spirit. This powerful song sets the pace for the rest of the album, laying the foundation for the high-energy experience that awaits.

“Mr. Horrible” showcases an artist who embodies a punk persona reminiscent of the legendary Sid Vicious. As the album builds towards its title track, “Generation Irrelevant,” the lyrics skillfully assemble a critique of the current generation. The artist expresses a generation’s deep offense at the mere existence of societal norms. The lines “All the gens just get in line, do your part, everything’s fine” suggest a call for conformity. The lyrics further highlight dissatisfaction with the way this generation is lost  “Spend your money spend it on signs, on the streets with your shrines.”

The journey of the album takes a detour on the softer side with “Deathrock Valley Girl,” offering a lyrical change of pace. The band quickly returns to their energetic foundation with the fast-paced songs, “Isolation” and “Vulgar Favors.” These tracks hit like a thrilling roller coaster ride, capturing the essence of raw, punk rock intensity.

Next, the listener pressing into “I Feel Nothing,” an unapologetic anthem that embodies The Oxys defiance and resilience. Amidst the challenges and disappointments of life, they rise above, embracing a carefree, who gives a fuck attitude.

In the song “Back on the Wire,” the band delves into the theme of toxic relationships by describing the narcissistic traits of a woman. The lyrics paint a picture of someone who thrives on drama, with the line, “Drama’s your number, poisons the game” highlighting their manipulative nature.

As The Oxys album draws to a close with a personal favorite “Screaming in Silence,” it leaves a lasting impact, evoking emotions of introspection and contemplation. This particular song resonates as it encapsulates the struggles and challenges on a daily basis. The feeling of being trapped within oneself, searching for a sense of connection and understanding. It serves as a reminder that even in the midst of silence, there is a profound and shared experience of battling inner demons. “Screaming in silence, trying to make it through another day, hiding from violence, melancholic heart in dismay.”
