The Sour Notes – Sleater Kinney’s “Modern Girl”

Check out Austin-based indie band, The Sour Notes take on Sleater-Kinney’s “Modern Girl”!  While on tour in Portland, the group had a chance to play in front of Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney) who had randomly stopped by the club.  The chance encounter inspired Sour Notes founder, Jared Boulanger to create his own version of the legendary Portland outfit’s song, “Modern Girl.” Boulanger describes the experience in his own words below:

I’ve been Sleater-Kinney super-fan ever since I saw them on ‘The Hot Rock’ tour in 1999 and haven’t missed a Texas tour stop of theirs since… When The Sour Notes played Portland on our last West Coast tour, Janet Weiss happened to be at the club and caught a song of ours up close, before walking out. I remember being like “OMG Janet is watching”, and probably overdid it. On the original version of ‘Modern Girl’, it’s cool how it’s so pretty-sounding, but gradually gets more fuzzy and distorted throughout the song. Even though the original is perfect, whenever I listened to it, I found myself hearing these other melodies in my head, which made me want to create a heavier, rock-version of the song. More than anything, I’ve always identified with the lyrics of this song… even though it’s called ‘Modern Girl’, it speaks to me without that title. I hope Carrie, Corin and Janet dig it!
