Live music preview: Liz Burrito & Geannie Friedman play BLK Vinyl for SIMS this Sunday

This Sunday afternoon BLK Vinyl is hosting a benefit for SIMS Foundation featuring solo sets by Liz Burrito and Geannie Friedman (Semihelix) from 4-7 p.m.. KOOP DJs will also be on hand to spin records while visitors browse the bins at the independent record store tucked away on East 6th Street. A portion of record sales will go to the music mental health organization with a matching contribution up to $1000. Independence Brewing will provide cold, craft brews to fans.

Besides having the opportunity to enjoy some free live music in an air-conditioned music lovers paradise (what music fan doesn’t like browsing vinyl shops?), each attendee will be given a raffle ticket. One lucky winner will walk away with a $50 gift certificate to BLK while another will receive a custom wood vinyl record stand branded with SIMS’ web address.

You might recognize Liz Burrito’s name if you’ve seen Kay Odyssey or Dikes of Holland, two local bands Burrito was a member of. The guitarist and keyboardist has released her first solo album, Hyper / Mellow. The new album dropped June 17 with artwork created by Burrito who has developed a visual art career during the pandemic to compliment her already impressive musical endeavors. For this artist, the approach was novel to her as she recorded the record sober.

The album is a great listen. Burrito is heavily influenced by punk and post-punk music and that is evident is the recording. Burrito plays guitar, piano, and sings vocals while Jonathan DiMarco adds guitar and keys. Mason Kinard handles bass duties. Drums, percussion and theremin are played by Phillip Dunne. The recording was tracked at 5th Street Studios and mixed at Seize the Means. All songs were written by Burrito. Evan Kleincke produced. We think it’s some of her best work. But y’all take a listen below and decide for yourself.

Geannie Friedman is the leader of Semihelix, a dream pop / psych rock act that dropped acclaimed album, Recoil . In fact, the record landed on The Cosmic Clash’s Best Austin Albums of 2021 list. The record was engineered by Matt Gerhard (Public Hi-Fi) at the Hen House. The material was mastered by Max Lorenzen.

The band has continued to gain momentum since, garnering a nomination in Resound Presents’ Unreleased contest. The event, sponsored by Desert Door is designed to highlight local acts Austin music fans may have not discovered yet.

From Resound’s website: “Unreleased was designed to expose Austin’s music lovers to all of the unheard local artists out there. This semi-battle-of-the-bands started out with 16 talented Texas artists, one of whom will win a grand prize of having their music video idea brought to life AND opening for a nationally touring headliner at Mohawk this fall.” Click on the link above and check out all the acts nominated and vote for your favorites.
