New Music Review: Austin Acts Color Candy, March and Beauty Drop New Records

Get ready for delicious ear candy in the form of new music from Austin with Color Candy’s new album “Something, Somebody” along with March and Beauty’s single “World Made Sense.” Both bands celebrated their new releases at Cheer Up Charlie’s on Wednesday, March 4.

Color Candy

Color Candy founders, Merri Palmer and Kevin Martin have come full circle with the band’s latest album “Something, Somebody.” This awesome five song collection perfectly captures this act’s indie-pop sound. Without hesitation, the opening track “Something Rather” features Merri Palmer’s vocals paving the way for the feelings of angst found the on new record. The instrumental arrangements on the album along with Palmer’s vocal inflections are reminiscent of early 90’s indie artists Liz Phair and Tanya Donelly of Belly.

The second track “Soda Red” expresses relationship disappointments “What will it take for you to just tell me the truth?” leading up to the hard hitting, melody changing, hook driving “Somebody Else.”  The tune, “Clouds are Closer” is a reminder that we all share those melancholy feelings once in a while, “You are not alone, we’ve all got monsters of our own.”

The closing track “When We Talk” loudly swells then lets you softly down. This type of songwriting is traditionally found in well-crafted indie albums. “Something, Somebody” is truly a worth a listen.  The record is clearly Color Candy’s best recording to date.

As a side note, Color Candy has been selected as a SXSW 2020 Official Artist. Check them out during the festival which begins next week. Details on their official showcase by The Loyalty Firm on March 19 can be found here.

March and Beauty

Contributing to the Austin indie-synth movement, rockers March and Beauty released their latest single on February 28 “World Made Sense” produced by Louie Lino (The Cardigans, Nada Surf, the New Pornographers.) March and Beauty’s destiny was forged by power couple Tim and Terri Dittmar leading them to collaborate with the multi-talented Paul Stautinger and Justin Bocanegra. It was not until the circle of players was completed that March and Beauty came to life. The power group is a reminder of musical influence such as legends Depeche Mode. Austin greats Bo Bud Greene and Desafinado still reverberates in their music.

Aside from artist influence, March and Beauty crafts their vision into their own art. “World Made Sense” is an amalgamation of orchestral arrangements featuring of modern electronic, slow rock beats and haunting vocals of Dittmar. The track places you in a trance as you contemplate the depths of the human condition.

“World Made Sense” will be featured in the up and coming EP set to release on April 3 followed by a release show on April 10 at Hotel Vegas with The Cosmic Clash favorites,  Darkbird and Think No Think.

The song will be featured on the group’s upcoming EP which will be released on April 3 with a show on April 10 with The Cosmic Clash favorites, Darkbird and Think No Think. RSVP and grab tickets here.
