Album Review: EVNTYD debut Eventide just dropped

On January 20, Julián Berdegué released his debut album for his project EVNTYD, entitled, “Eventide”, complete with a release party at Empire Control Room and Garage. The Austin-based musician released his first single “Kyoto, Tokyo” in 2020.

During the pandemic, Berdegue taught himself drums, bass, and piano to bring forth his first album, “Eventide”. If that wasn’t enough, EVNTYD kicked off a Texas tour and premiered a music video for his track, “Quotidian” at the same time.. The album “Eventide” takes on a somber mood. We recommend this record if you like DIIV and Beach Fossils.

The melancholy drawl of guitar in opening track “Quotidian” captures the banality of day to day routine, eventually capturing the solo as a quiet treat; finding delight in having a secret lover, leading into an echo-ey guitar solo supplemented by the bass component.

Berdegué’s nonchalant vocals in “Boredom” linger drowsily over his music. “Make up your mind, It’s hard to find, don’t think too much,” continues to enhance the mood by increasing the tempo, breaking forth from all the challenges he creates to keep himself from becoming stagnant. At the bridge, Berdegué layers his potential ideas of amusement over his earlier indifference.

Berdegué’s talent on guitar opens up the track “Beautiful”. Coming right after “Boredom”, the lyrics continue on his thirst for life and filling in the time and space we have on earth with things that fill us with joy. “Joy is not a crime”: while it’s seen as unacceptable to cry in public, rarely is feeling happiness shamelessly ever addressed.

Ironically, “Sleepy Head” departs from the lo-fi existential commentaries for an upbeat romantic tune. A danceable intro leads in a confession of staying up all night. “Lay right where you’re at, I’ll make you breakfast.”

If you are a fan of lo-fi, dream pop, with a smattering of post-punk, we recommend giving “Eventide ” a listen. EVENTYD will be performing at Hole in the Wall on February 9 with Daydream Twins and Telecom.
