Live music preview: Girls Rock Austin presents Festive Fest at FSG December 17

Award-winning music non-profit Girls Rock Austin is hosting Festive Fest, their annual end of year fundraiser on December 17 at Feels So Good (FSG) to raise funds for their programs as well as celebrate their recent awards and accolades, such as the 2022 Project Glimmer Award, 2022 Nonprofit of the Year (Austin Award Program), 2022 Best Nonprofit nominee (Austin Music Awards), becoming the first nonprofit to partner with the Moody Center, plus having provided over 250,000 meals to families facing food insecurity through their Operation Lunch Box program.

The event includes performances by beloved comic book heroes led by Japanese visual and musical artist Peelander Yellow from outer space with Peelander-Z, former Willow Smith tour mates We Don’t Ride Llamas, vibrant “pop queen of Austin”  Kady Rain, queer art rockers Transy Warhol and a special acoustic solo performance from Calliope Musical’s dynamic powerhouse front-woman Carrie Fussell.

Speakers will be in attendance like gender-bending glam rocker, Caleb De Casper talking on LGBT rights and HB64 as well as a raffle, vendors and more. Girls Rock Austin is empowering girls, trans and gender non-conforming youth through music education, mentors and self-care. GRA is more than teaching young people how to play music, it’s a safe space for kids to grow and learn confidence. Fundraising for scholarships is essential for the organization, as the favorite local nonprofit welcomes all students, regardless of their ability to pay.

Representatives from Girls Rock Austin will be on site to sign up potential volunteers as well as registering students for Girls Rock Austin’s educational programs, like Camp Rock-A-Rama and Rock-A-Rama After School, where kids ages 8-17 learn how to play an instrument, join a band, write and play their own original songs and make music videos while participating in STEAM and self-care workshops. The experience includes valuable mentoring from local women and LGBTQ musicians.

“Thank you so much for such a wonderful opportunity for my girl. I wish there was something like this when I was younger. You don’t know what this means to her, she told me every day of camp last year that she felt like she was home. You do such an incredible thing for the young ladies and I can’t thank you enough for the positive influence you have on my daughter’s life.”
-Celeste Fahnert, parent of longtime camper

“Girls Rock Camp has been in my life since middle school (and) it’s been one of the few things I can 100% rely on. All of the volunteers consistently show up for each other and the campers all the time. It’s why it feels like home. You guys drilled into my brain how to be a better person, to myself and to others. Y’all taught me the value of honesty, respect, and the support of a team more than anyone else had. That’s more than I can express in words and I can’t thank you guys enough.”

-Joules Burke, age 17
