Song Premiere: Johnny Zachman Band drops After Hours, performs Wednesday

Austin’s Johnny Zachman Band (FKA Zachman) releases new song, “After Hours,” December 8 (Wedensday). The Cosmic Clash is proud to exclusively premiere the groovy new track today. The band is preparing a new record for release in 2022, Summer Sessions. The forthcoming album will include today’s track in addition to the previously released, “I’ve Been Waiting For You For So Long.”  The Johnny Zachman Band (JZB) has previously released four EPs including their most recent, Lotto which included the track, “All Wired Up” that premiered at TCC last March.

The new tune is quite a departure from the hard-hitting punk vibes of “All Wired Up.” Johnny Zachman talks about the band’s intention when they set out to record Summer Sessions, “we wanted to make a record that had enough space in it—both in terms of songwriting and production—where it sounded like it could be an unfinished or unreleased album. Like something you’d download from Napster in 2001 and feel like you might be the only person in the world who knows about it.

That looseness also really allowed the band to shine. The stress of the past two years has made us much more interested in writing music that makes us feel good. So, we made this loose, celebratory, groovy record—and we’re so proud of it.”

Loose and groovy are apt terms for “After Hours.” The song has a warm, homey vibe that makes the listener feel as though they’re getting to overhear a great studio session. The album title is a nod to that feeling. Band members, Mike and Matt LoCoco deliver great performances on drums and guitar respectively. Jaime Knittel makes a solid contribution on bass while the band’s namesake handles vocals and acoustic guitar deftly. We think you’ll enjoy the track as much as we do.

Summer Sessions was recorded at Hen House Studios and Estuary Recording Facility in Austin, Texas by Gary Calhoun James, who also mixed the record. It’s being mastered by Carl Saff in Chicago.

JZB will celebrate the release of “After Hours” with a December 8 (Wednesday) show at The Ballroom at Spider House. The bill will also feature The Foxtones (Neo-Soul from ATX), The Totems (Desert Surf from ATX), and Deep Fried Soul (Funk & Soul Septet from San Marcos). Advanced tickets are available here
