Video Premiere: Como Las Movies reinvent Cumbia for listeners

By now, frequent reader, you know we’re big fans of Cumbia-fusion act, Como Las Movies. For those who are new here, Como Las Movies is an Austin four-piece Latin fusion band that makes neo-Cumbia. Cumbia is a folkloric and dance genre originating from the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Como Las Movies has enhanced that sound by employing elements of psych-rock, rock n roll and other non-traditional forms with Cumbia. The result is something special.

Today The Cosmic Clash is proud to premiere a video made for Como Las Movies‘ re-imagined cover of Super Grupo G’s track “Cumbia de los Monjes.” The clip clocks in at just over four minutes of Latin music bliss, highlighted by visual effects provided by local director and artist, Victor Enriquez, better known as Drip/Cuts. The artist has produced work for Austin psych rockers Holy Wave, local imprint Holodeck Records and others. The single was produced, recorded and mixed by Dylan Fisher at Chicken Run Studios on Austin’s only Latin vinyl imprint, Trucha Soul Records

Led by multi-instrumentalist and primary songwriter, Nelson Valente Aguilar, Como Las Movies has continually produced original Latin music that both reflects their love of traditional Latin forms while reflecting more contemproary sounds they hear as working musicians. Nelson along with Greñas (percussion), Jeff the Jaguar (bass) and Rene Chavez (guitar) make compelling sonic textures woven with Cumbia we think most music fans will appreciate.

“We have never produced a music video in quarantine before, so that was an interesting experience. A while back we had seen Drip//Cuts do live visuals for one of Trucha Soul’s DJ nights and were inspired by that scene and wanted to capture that energy. Visually we also wanted to work with the idea of remoteness while paying homage to the Cumbia aesthetic and styles of northern Mexico and Monterrey specifically. This is the first time we let go of creative control and let a visual artist build the concept and coordination and we are really happy with the direction he and Trucha Soul took and ran with,” said Aguilar about the new video.
