Live music review: Built To Spill thrilled a sold-out Antone’s Wednesday

[ngg src=”galleries” ids=”27″ display=”basic_slideshow”]After catching Built To Spill‘s performance at the Hi, How Are You Benefit Tuesday at ACL Live, we eagerly anticipated the band’s sold-out performance on Wednesday at Antone’s. The Boise-based trio led by guitarist and vocalist Doug Martsch turned in a stellar set at the East Fifth Street club that featured several songs from seminal hit album, You In Reverse. That album, frankly made us fans of the indie-rock outfit that inspired countless artists in the Pacific Northwest region during the 1990s including Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse who went on to become Boise’s most well-known rock band.

Martsch has long been the papa bear of the Boise scene, lending his wisdom to the up and coming musicians in the area. The gifted songwriter recently announced the band was cycling back to the original idea of a rotating live lineup. The band formed a semi-permanent lineup following You in Reverse‘s success. What makes Built To Spill stand out from other acts is Martsch’s willingness to experiment with effects and sounds to amplify his eye-popping guitar work. The man knows how to play a guitar like a boss. His modest confidence is apparent as he moves about the stage.

Set highlights included a brain-melting version of “Goin Against Your Mind” that we caught on video above. Watch Martsch manipulate what appears to be every effect pedal, knob and dial available to him to deliver a unique take on the song he probably played hundreds of times. Keeping it fresh is what Built To Spill do best, taking 20 year-old tracks and turning them into present day wins on stage. It is a testament to Martsch’s songwriting the music sounds so relevant after this much time has passed.

We’ve included a few shots from our guest photographer David Castaneda. We’re pleased with how the images came out. We think you’ll like them too once you flip through the slideshow above.

Built To Spill continue touring in April with dates in Dublin, London and Paris among other places. You can play some of their official music videos here.
