Essay: Austin Punk Rockers Wore Drag Too

The unjust law extends beyond drag to trans, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary individuals. Texas aims to follow suit with at least four suggested bills that may restrict drag performances as well as performances by trans, nonbinary, and GNC persons. State legislators in Texas are setting a dangerous precedent that will encourage violence against drag, trans and queer people. This is not who Texans are and flies in the face of our friendly culture. Austin punk rockers wore drag too.

In early October, a new Daniel Johnston inspired podcast “Hi, How Are You?” premiered, a collaboration between the Hi, How Are You Project and The Drag Audio Production. The University of Texas at Austin hosted interview musicians on site at Austin City Limits Music Festival, alongside clinical advisors from American Psychological Association and Texas Psychological Association.

The Austin Chronicle. Curtin then released a list of Austin’s top 200 records. His point? The musical bar is set so high in Austin that half of that momentous number of releases were deserving of some kind of mention in a year-end list.
