Live music review: Day one and two of Levitation brought world’s best independent acts to Austin

The first two days of Levitation Festival 2024 featured multiple stacked bills for a plethora of packed venues in the downtown Austin area and beyond. The Cosmic Clash team was in attendance to capture the action and highlighted some of our favorite acts that made their way to Austin for the action-packed Halloween weekend. From the Red River Cultural District to South Austin, the carefully curated talent brought their best for the masses that flock to the local music joints to watch the coveted Black Angels produced weekend with some of the independent music world’s best acts.

Live music review: Mikaela Davis was angelic at Austin Psych Fest at Far Out Lounge

My first time seeing Mikaela Davis was on the BMI stage at the Austin City Limits Festival in 2015, and I expected her sound to be folkie, singer-songwriter music that I’m not typically into. When she took the stage with her harp, I heard an angelic, neo-psychedelic country sound that pleased my ears and I have followed her career via social media since. 

Fast forward nine years to Day Three at Austin Psych Fest (2024), when festival-goers almost lost a mellow day of music due to the weather. The rain moved on and Van Mary eased us into a swampy day at the Janice Stage with a super-chill set. The afternoon continued to heat up as Mikaela Davis & Southern Star took to the Willie Stage for the final day of APF.

Music News: When Dr. Cornel West Talks Music, You Listen

Local nonprofit Austin Texas Musicians threw the event, entitled, “The State of the Music Industry”: A Roundtable with Dr. Cornel West which was moderated by the org’s Advocacy & Education Manager Sarah Hall; this roundtable included folks from the scene, including Ray Price, who is on the board of directors and heads the free Notes for Notes recording studio which gives kids interested in music a chance to explore their interests. Also involved were Pedro Carvalho, owner of the Far Out Lounge, Courtney Santana, singer and CEO of domestic violence resource Survive2Thrive, along with Sharon Mays, chief of staff for Council Member Natasha Harper-Madison

For 2023, Levitation, founded by Austin psych-rock wizards The Black Angels and festival organizer Rob Fitzpatrick, brought the goods for this year’s installment.
