Album Review: Austin Hip-Hop artist Pat G released Talk To Me Nice
In July, Pat G released his latest EP, Talk To Me Nice, July 11 on his own, Be Relentless label. It was his first release since his 2019 LP, Whatever it Takes. So much happened in the time between the two album releases, the Temple-born, Austin-based emcee felt it appropriate to convey his personal and artistic growth with this, his fifth record.
The record reveals another dimension of Pat’s persona as an emcee. Working with several producers throughout the EP, Pat G’s delivery is more bold and confident, than with previous releases. This is evident from the first track. The record starts with the track “Let’s Go”, an energizing opener that serves as an anthem for what’s to come in the remaining four songs of the EP.
The tone shifts a bit with the following track, “Down,” featuring the Brooklyn-Queens duo of Wxlfman and Louie The Profit, AKA (Wild Prxfits). After meeting in 2017 at the Toronto Indie Music Festival, Pat and Wild Prxfits reconnected to collaborate on the grimey, classic Hip Hop track, produced by Tone Jonez.
“Spectrum” is a standout track on the album. Pat G wrote the lyrics years ago, but the song didn’t fully form until the preparation for Talk To Me Nice, when he asked his cousin, Saridae, to write and perform the captivating hook. “Spectrum” adds significant depth to Talk To Me Nice, and displays Pat G’s versatility.
Pat G’s lyrical prowess is on full display with the EP’s fourth track, “Nobody.” Produced by Joey Phoenix, the number places Pat’s complex verbal delivery—loaded with layered figurative language—on full display. If you’ve listened to Pat G’s previous recordings, and appreciate his dynamic flow, “Nobody” is a number that is sure to impress.
The album’s finale, Chris Beats-produced “Honest Conversation,” is the EP’s most introspective number. Reflecting on trials and accomplishments, emphatically conveying the sense that no obstacle prompts even the slightest discouragement for the emcee, it’s the perfect crescendo for the concise, explorative, five-track project.
Ultimately, TalkTo Me Nice delivers a statement. After years of hiatus, Pat G has a lot to say; he’s grown as an artist and as a person, and has refined his approach to his craft. With regard to upcoming projects, Pat G says, “I promise I won’t wait years to drop new music.” Pat G has a renewed passion for his music, it radiates through Talk To Me Nice.
