Album Review: The Cuckoos recently released debut LP I Hate Love

Young, up-start Austin band, The Cuckoos, recently released their debut album I Hate Love, a sizzling synthesis of varied, classic genres that intrigues and energizes the listener. Heavy synth, classic rock instrumentation and unmistakable rock n roll vocals make this record an instant Austin classic, propelling the group to premier status as far as we’re concerned.

Produced and mixed by Austin’s Chris “Frenchie” Smith at his The Bubble recording studio, I Hate Love displays a well-developed chemistry between members of the Austin quartet; Kenneth Frost (vocals/keys), Dave North (guitar), Eric Ross (bass) and Cole Koenning (drums).

The record leads off with “Heartbreak Paradise,” a tone-setting track with signature elements of early 80’s new wave, soul and punk. Frost’s hyper-literate lyrics and poetic delivery blend perfectly with the ultra-powerful, heavy-hitting instrumentation.

The track, “Carpe Diem” follows suit with a heavy, fast-paced punk track, fueled with animated energy. While the song, “Why Don’t U Ever Call Me Anymore” is a catchy electro-funk-inspired dance track that maneuvers in New Power Generation-like fashion between electric keyboard and a slashing guitar part. Each song brings its own eye-opening dynamics to the album, making it an incredibly enjoyable listen.

The entire I Hate Love LP is a rupture of dance-inducing movement, with even the most emotive, slower-paced numbers contributing to the dark-yet-jovial atmosphere. We won’t be surprised if this recording ends up on our year-end, Best Austin Albums list.

Wrapped up in a shell of what could be the soundtrack to an 80’s horror flick, I Hate Love is an energetic and rejuvenating proclamation of love and loss, tossed with a touch of political unease. It establishes The Cuckoos’ signature sound as emphatically and engagingly original.

The Cuckoos also put on one hell of a live show, and have recently been named SXSW Official Artists for 2020. Upcoming dates include tonight’s performance at ABGB with Tommy Rebel and the Rightous. The Cuckoos play BD Riley’s for their official SXSW showcase on Wednesday, March 18. Find the full showcase lineup details here.
