Live music review: Interpol Honors 20 Years of Antics with Precision and Nostalgia at Moody Amphitheater

Almost twenty years ago, I downloaded my first song off iTunes. I put $0.99 down for the Interpol lead single Evil that would keep a steady hold on the automatic “Top 25 Most Played” playlist. After obsessively listening to the song, Antics became the first album I downloaded. From there it was The Strokes, Pixies, Modest Mouse, and Sonic Youth. Antics was my gateway into a wider array of sonic landscapes and I am eternally grateful for that 30-second iTunes preview that hooked me.

On November 21, Austin’s Moody Amphitheater hosted a celebration of the 2004 album, where the band delivered a masterful two-hour set to honor the record’s 20th anniversary and provide some fan favorites to boot.

Live music review: England’s Idles delivered wild night at Moody Amphitheater May 21

Sometimes, chaos is laced with love. Bristol, England’s Idles have been shooting off musical mortar shells since 2009, and each new release has seen the English band building off the previous. If you’re a fan of post-punk, hardcore, dance-punk, or anything punk rock-related in new music, Idles is a band that will strike a chord with your music listening holes. On their latest album, Tangk, Idles enlisted the help of Radiohead’s right-hand man, Nigel Godrich. The result was a more dialed-back, calculated effort from the group, touching on hints of dance music and soft rock cuts that aren’t without the England band’s carefully calibrated  ballistic nature that their rabid fanbase has become accustomed to.

While a full moon shone down from above, the audience swayed and cheered to Father John Misty and Suki Waterhouse’s captivating performances.

Live music review: Fleet Foxes brought fireworks to Moody Amp 4th of July weekend

Seattle’s Fleet Foxes debut received similar lazy comparisons to Crosby, Stills & Nash and Simon and Garfunkel reincarnate. While it’s great company, the band has routinely broken the mold in each album cycle, challenging themselves to push the outer edges of their competence and confidence. On July 3 at Moody Amphitheater, they demonstrated why harmony-rich folk-rock can be sophisticated and breathtaking.

Live music review: Phoebe Bridgers the kid just might be alright

The world is a scary place these days. A real fucking scary place. The world is also a beautiful, amazing place, and we are all in this big, scary, beautiful place together. At least that is how Phoebe Bridgers makes us feel with her progressive brand of folk, indie-pop music that permeates the current emotional climate that most of us are experiencing in these tumultuous times. Despite Bridgers’ young, female fan-base, the kid just might be alright.

Live music review: My Morning Jacket Delivers One Big Holiday to Moody Amphitheater

Where most artists deliver the runtime of a long HBO episode, a My Morning Jacket set is an epic Peter Jackson film. On April 29 in Austin, the band played a two-hour, 45 minute marathon, with nearly as many songs (22) as years they have been together (24). In other words, it was your typical, kick-ass MMJ set.

On Sunday, September 12 Glass Animals played Austin’s shiny, new Moody Amphitheatre at Waterloo Park. While it wasn’t the first performance The Cosmic Clash has covered at the venue (Gary Clark Jr opening weekend), it was the first time at the venue for this writer.
