Live music preview: Austin Psych Fest announced masterfully curated lineup today
Levitation’s Austin Psych Fest will return to The Far Out Lounge & Stage in South Austin on April 25 – April 27 for yet another year of a masterfully curated lineup by famed booker Rob Fitzpatrick and Resound Presents. Since returning to a Spring edition on top of the regular Levitation Fall Edition, Austin Psych Fest has both stayed in touch with the current world of independent music at large and the roots of what made the festival the coveted phenomenon it is in the present day.
With the return of Austin Psych Fest in the Spring time, Levitation chose to bring the festivities to the massive Far Out Lounge backyard, a beautiful spot on South Congress that allows for all-day layovers and no set overlap. This allows the visual art portion of the festival to shine, with psychedelia-inspired projections on the stages reaching back to the plant life that populates the space for a mesmerizing experience. Visual artists will include Mad Alchemy, TV Eye, Slim Reaper, and Attic Space.
The booked talent will include post-rock titans Explosions In The Sky and Godspeed You! Black Emperor and heavy psych rockers in the realm of Canadian act Black Mountain and German outfit Kadaver. Local Austin experimental indie extraordinaries The Octopus Project will also join the lineup, a collective known for constantly resculpting their live sets to fit the vibe of any lineup they lend their hands to.
The iconic Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth fame will also join Austin Psych Fest, fresh off the release of her latest studio full-length, The Collective. Black Midi’s Geordie Greep is also making his way to Austin this Spring, feeding his former band’s diehards after the unveiling of his debut solo effort, The New Sound. Portland, Oregon’s STRFKR will also appear in their Austin Psych Fest debut, along with a solo set from Alex Maas of The Black Angels.
Legacy act Dinosaur Jr. will perform on the festival’s final day, appearing to play their classic record Without A Sound for their headlining performance, frontman J. Mascis’ third Austin appearance since SXSW 2024. Long-running New Jersey indie trio Yo La Tengo will also join the party, their return to Austin after a two-night, sold-out run at Mohawk in The Red River Cultural District in downtown Austin. Other acts include San Antonio native Garrett T. Capps and his backing band NASA Country, and local psych favorites Holy Wave.
Additionally, a downtown kickoff before the festival and afterparties after each day’s conclusion at Far Out Lounge will be announced later, along with more programming for each day of the fest.
The 2024 edition of Austin Psych Fest included Courtney Barnett, The Black Angels, Frankie & The Witch Fingers, Earthless, Kurt Vile & The Violators, and All Them Witches.
