SXSW preview: Octopus Project to play 13th Floor Tuesday

Typically heading into South by Southwest (SXSW), we’re neck deep into finding new bands to see during the 10-day long festival that begins Friday. With that in mind, The Cosmic Clash partnered with Play to the Plants to curate a special lineup featuring local electro-pop-punk heroes, The Octopus Project at The Black Angels-owned 13th Floor on Tuesday, March 14.  This event is both for folks arriving in Austin for technology keynotes and panels but late enough in the week that some of our music friends will already be here to join the fun.

Play to the Plants is a cannabis and plant-themed booking company who have been producing shows in Austin for a little over a year. The company capped the cycle by co-hosting at New Year’s Eve party with The Cosmic Clash at this same venue featuring Holy Wave, Christian Bland (The Black Angels) and Hidden Ritual. Naturally we wanted to attempt to top that impressive lineup for our SXSW event, Psychedelic Plants Clash.

Joining Octopus Project on stage are; BALTHVS (Bogota, Colombia), Laveda (Albany, NY), Tetchy (Brooklyn, NY), a special guest act from Brazil and Austin’s own Caleb de Casper. While we’re excited to discover new bands, we figured the best way to guarantee seeing great performances with exceptional artists was to ask acts we like to come hang with us and former Austin Chronicle Music Editor, Kevin Curtin for a day party you’ll never forget. We can promise you that much.

we convinced Mr. Curtin to ply his witty charms and to come out of his Sadadical (Daddy sabbatical).  Curtin and PTTP founder Zak Peters will tell everyone how damn good Octopus Project are.  Then the former University of Texas film students will rock the intimate stage at 13th Floor with a sonic palette matched only by the impressive visual element the band brings with them. Led by Josh and Yvonne Lambert along with longtime collaborator, Tito Miranda, The Octopus Project are a band many Austin music fans hold close to their heart. With Yvonne playing theremin, keys, guitar and handling vocals, along with Josh and Tito handling drums and guitars, those lucky enough to grab a ticket before the show sells out will be treated to a performance your friends will be jealous of.

Before Octopus Project dazzle fans with lights and sound, Colombian upstarts, BALTHVS hit the stage with a psych-rock mashed with tropidelic and other South American forms, perform. If unique and unusual sounds framed in great melodies is your thing, you’re gonna want to catch this band. We’re stoked they’re joining us.

We also have dream rock duo Laveda. We’re looking forward to seeing this act live for the first time after watching their haunting video for new Laveda track, “Clean.” The group’s new album is due out. April 14

.

Austin glam-rock performer can best be described via the artist’s website biography, “From the horror cabaret and glam rock of his past to his current dark synthpop sound, Austin-based performer Caleb De Casper always brings a stunning in-your-face theatricality to his music and live shows.” All this is true, of course. We’ve watched fans who we not familiar with De Casper’s act get drawn into his mind-blowing performances.

Tuesday’s event is sponsored by Earlybird CBD, ATX Cold Brew, Tillery Street Plant Company and Weird Water and Yerba Mate Tea.
