Tokyo Police Club put on a fun show at The Historic Scoot Inn
Just over 10 years after the release of their album, Champ, indie-rockers Tokyo Police Club released a deluxe edition of the classic LP and devoted a multi-city tour to commemorate the anniversary of the album’s initial release. On November 13, TPC performed in front of a jam-packed Historic Scoot Inn for the Austin stop on their “Champ 10” tour. The band put on a fun show.
After an energetic performance from the opening act, Austin’s own, Darkbird, the four piece from Ontario, Canada took the stage. Fans of the quartet were beyond pleased when the opening number “Favourite Food” kicked off. The track that also opens the album Champ, would mark the start of TPC’s performance of the entire LP.
Vocalist and bassist Dave Monks, keyboardist Graham Wright,(guitarist/percussion), and Greg Aslop (drums/percussion), owned their assigned portions of the stage, but they were all smiles from the start. It was somewhere around “Wait Up,” the fourth song on the album, that the band seemed to find a groove that translated into an interactive stage presence. In other words, they relaxed enough on stage to begin having fun with each other.
Finishing up their initial set with “Frankenstein,” the culminating track on Champ, the band stepped off stage for not even one minute before Monks returned to engage the audience with acoustic renditions of “Juno,” “Love,” “The Harrowing Adventures Of…” and “Ready To Win” before the rockers blitzed the crowd with their latest single release, “Top 5,” a number which captures the spirit of the band’s signature rock sound.
Three more songs, wrapping up with “Argentina (Parts I, II, and III)”, the band left the crowd quite satisfied with the performance. And just when show-goers thought the Austin leg of TPC’s Champ 10 tour was a wrap, The quartet returned to the stage to kick off the second encore of the night. “Tessellate” and “Your English Is Good” would send the audience off as the lights kicked on; the bar shutters closed, and security sent people on their way.
Throughout the exciting evening of entertainment, something that stood out is how happy the members of Tokyo Police Club are when playing together. David Monks was smiling the entire time, and all four members hit their notes with precision, and it was obvious that they are not only a tight band, but good friends.
Tokyo Police Club planned to tour the UK and EU to follow the North America shows, but sadly has had to recently cancel due to a spike in COVID cases in Europe currently.
