Live Music Preview: The Deer, Moving Panoramas, Como Las Movies to play SIMS Foundation benefit May 15

There is no clearer sign that live music is coming back to Austin than mental health organization, The SIMS Foundation planning a benefit show Saturday, May 15 at Far Out Lounge at 12 p.m. The non-profit that provides mental health and addiction services to Austin music industry members and their dependent families is hosting a slate of events in May to honor Mental Health Awareness Month beginning with this amazing lineup at the Far Out Lounge in South Austin. The venue is all outdoors on three acres with social distancing measures in place for the safety of patrons, staff and performers. The event is sponsored by a generous donation from The Zebra.

This is the first time SIMS has been able to organize in-person events since the pandemic hit Texas. Saturday’s lineup is impressive with psych, folk-rockers, The Deer are playing their first performance since the hiatus began. Next on the bill are Cosmic Clash favorites Moving Panoramas who have also just begun performing live again. The shoe-gazey, psych rock outfit always delivers a great show. Openers Como Las Movies play a Latin brand of psych-rock, cumbia music like you’ve never heard before. Fans should plan on arriving early to catch CLM. Last but certainly not least DJ Raquiqui will be spinning tunes between sets. A member of nationally recognized Chulita Vinyl Club, she’s been playing vinyl around Austin for several years. Tickets can be purchased in advance here.

The event is family friendly and all ages are welcome. There will be a Vintage Market featuring clothing and artisan vendors. SIMS Foundation will have an information table for folks who want to learn more about the organization’s good work. There will also be merchandise from the performing acts available for purchase.

The Far Out has four food trucks for a variety of dining options for fans. Their own truck features brunch specials on the weekend. While there are plenty of parking options, The Far Out is encouraging fans to car pool or ride share to the event for their convenience. For folks who want even more great music, Nemegata, Tiarra Girls and Gio Chamba perform that evening following the SIMS Benefit.

Don’t forget to grab tickets to what promises to be a great show. Bring the whole family or a group of friends for a fun day at Far Out Lounge that helps Austin musicians and music industry members get the mental health services they need.
