Video Premiere: The Cuckoos new single I’ll Be Ur Tramp

In what now feels like ancient history, this past January, The Cuckoos put on a show at one of Austin’s most intimate venues, Cheer Up Charlie’s. On June 29, the band dropped a new single and video. The new clip depicts a man (Frost), sitting alone in a chair, in black and white with a vintage color TV playing footage from the aforementioned show.  This is the premise for the Austin-based The Cuckoos’ latest music video and single release “I’ll Be Ur Tramp.”

The Cuckoos have been busy this year supporting their most recent album, I Hate Love with a plethora of online performances to keep us entertained during the pandemic. Now a brand new song has been released.  Somehow they found a way to write, record and formulate a simple but clever new music video in a time of social distancing.

The eccentric and charismatic Kenneth Frost, alone with a chair and a television, captures our common dilemma.  The video brings to light the frustration of solitude while solely being entertained with TV and memories of live music.  The juxtaposition of colorful memories and black-and-white present emphasize the seclusion we all currently face.

Frost elaborates, “‘I’ll Be Ur Tramp’ is a fun little love number and for the video, I wanted to do something a little more simple and easy on the eyes. I’ve been using the quarantine to get a little creative and use what I’ve got at home with me. The live footage in the middle is from our album release show back in January at Cheer Up Charlie’s. It was a great show and I’m really missing those times right now.”

The song itself feels as if it is in direct continuation of the LP. It is, in fact, the second single off of The Cuckoos forthcoming EP Honeymoon Phases which is due out in August. Synth-guitar fusion laced with elaborate lyrics, delivered in idiosyncratic form, makes “I’ll Be Ur Tramp” an anthem for an age. The baritone vocal delivery take cues from the likes of David Bowie who Frost lists as an influence.

The fine artistic capabilities of The Cuckoos are clear.  Their signature style is unmistakable. Their talent is overwhelming and the message contained in The Cuckoos lyrics is artfully left to the interpretation of the audience. “I’ll Be Ur Tramp” blurs the lines between genres, fusing rock n’ roll, funk, and dance music.  The Cuckoos are certainly a musical force.
