Music video premiere: Ila Minori “Gritty Streets of Rome” brings romance of Italy to song

San Antonio act, Ila Minori‘s video “Gritty Streets of Rome” brings romance of Italy to life with this gem of a song written while lead vocalist and guitarist Erica Monzon lived in Italy in 2015. The singer and songwriter has been voted Best Singer/Songwriter by San Antonio Current readers for good reason, the woman has beautiful pipes. Hearing the track for the first time, evoked memories of Mazzy Star’s hit 1993 hit album, So Tonight That I Might See. The group was indeed inspiration for Monzon who confirmed Hope Sandoval’s band was a huge influence.

The video was directed by Kat Tan and was filmed in unorthodox locations around Rome; a Rome Metro station, obscure public parks and street art locales while lovers embrace, seemingly unaware of the urban chaos around them. The clip has a DIY feel while the setting feels entirely appropriate for the song which highlights Monzon’s ethereal voice amid a jangly guitar part. It’s also an honest look at the band as the clip was filmed in the location Ila Minori created the track. We like that aspect of the video in contrast to the popular stylized look of many current popular music videos.
