Exclusive Album premiere: Chill Russell to drop rocking debut, host release party at Mohawk Friday

Austin rockers Chill Russell are set to drop a true rock n roll debut album Friday with a release show at The Mohawk with The Cover Letter (TCL) who drop a new single tomorrow.  The nine-track self-titled record is a mix of classic and indie rock. That means the record is both easily digested but has enough complexity to entertain your average music nerd. It also means heading to the ‘Hawk for a double bill featuring new music from Chill Russell along with what promises to be an entertaining The Cover Letter set, is a no-brainer. Tickets are available at the Mohawk door. The show is all ages and begins at 9 p.m.

Chill Russell self-produced the record at Quiet Time Studio with Nick Landis mastering the recording at Terra Nova Digital Audio. Bassist Daniel Ducloux engineered the studio sessions. It’s clear these musicians know what they’re doing. They’ve made an exemplary debut studio effort on what we’re guessing was a limited budget. The first single released is also the first on the track listing, “The Change.” An official video for the song will be released soon. Like their PR folks at Penny Loafer PR, we like track three, “A New Kind of Love.” The song has a great bass line, beautiful harmonies and a funky beat propelling the song forward. Take a listen to the album stream below and choose your favorite. It’s nice to know musicians in Austin still believe in good, old-fashioned guitar rock.

The band’s drummer, Patrick Barrow is also a member of The Cover Letter. He’ll be pulling double duty tomorrow on the inside stage at the Red River venue. Incidentally, we recently caught Chill Russell at Pecan Street Festival a couple weeks ago. The trio delivered a solid performance in the heat of the day.  The group does not currently have tour dates listed. If you want to catch this act anytime soon, head over to Mohawk Friday.

The new album can be ordered online or purchased at the show along with the usual assortment of band merchandise.
