When we noticed Rhode Island’s Deer Tick were coming back to Austin, we made a mental note as the indie, folk-rock foursome are among our favorite live acts going back to being introduced to the band at Do512’s Lounge years ago. John McCauley’s songwriting along with that of band mates, guitarist Ian O’Neil and bothers Christopher (bass) and Dennis Ryan (drums). The group is tight knit and it shows in their cohesive live performance as it did last Wednesday at Austin’s Stubb’s BBQ.

Album Review: Homegrown released by Neil Young 45 years later

While I am not one to fall into regret, I do enjoy exploring the road less traveled. That turn you didn’t take, the zig when you should have zagged, the song no one else recorded, or the B-side the DJ never flipped. I love discovering “new old music” as exemplified on Neil Young’s record Homegrown which was released last week; 45 years after it was recorded.

Best Austin Albums of 2019

Two years ago, over 400 albums were released by Austin artists according to Kevin Curtin at
The Austin Chronicle. Curtin then released a list of Austin’s top 200 records. His point? The musical bar is set so high in Austin that half of that momentous number of releases were deserving of some kind of mention in a year-end list. While we applaud him for the effort in producing a massive list of worthy albums, we’re keeping it simple with a more manageable collection of best Austin albums we loved listening to in the past year.
