Live music review: Haunting acoustic sets by Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin at Parish

y Segall and fellow songwriting partner Mikal Cronin shared an intimate acoustic bill on Sunday, April 6 at Austin East Side venue Parish, and the results were a haunting series of tunes to a seated crowd. A masterclass in both recording and touring, the duo pulled from various records that showed them presenting a side of them that we don’t hear that often. There was no electric guitar mania to be found, but something different was brought to the table by the two living indie rock overlords, and the results showed a realm of musical honesty and longtime friendship.

Prolific garage rocker, Ty Segall brought his current tour to Mohawk on April 22 in support of his latest album, Three Bells. The new record has seen generally favorable reviews, with a Metacritic score of 82. A frequent performer in Austin, Segall always draws a devoted audience to his Central Texas shows and last month’s gig was no exception.

Live music preview: Garage rock titan Ty Segall brings his Three Bells tour to Mohawk April 22

The California musician has made Austin his second home, playing triumphant sets at various venues around the area. After a triumphant performance to wrap up his backing band, The Freedom Band’s era, he is embarking on another tour supporting his latest Chicago-based Drag City Records studio effort, Three Bells, one of his most polished works to date. For Austin’s stop on the tour circuit, Ty Segall will perform at Red River Cultural District staple Mohawk, in the heart of the downtown area on April 22.

Ty Segall and his Freedom Band, which includes Mikal Cronin on bass, Charlie Moothart on drums, and Emmett Kelly on guitar, took the stage at Mohawk June 18 to a sold out crowd. It was Segall’s second show at Mohawk in just the past three months and his third since last October’s Levitation festival, both times playing drums for the trio Fuzz.
