Live music preview: Mexico City rockers Los Blenders set to play 13th Floor on Saturday with Hidden Ritual

You may be too young to remember the first wave of Rock en Espano that spread across North America in the 90s. Bands like Caifanes, Mana, Maldita Vecindad and countless others were heard across airwaves in the U.S. and across Latin America. For this writer, it was the first time we’d heard Spanish language music that rocked like the bands we loved to discover on college radio and cool stations like L.A.’s KROQ. We even attended a concert where Spanish and English-speaking rock bands shared a bill at Universal Amphitheater the oddly indoor venue at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. The possibilities seemed endless. Fast forward to 2025 and Rock en Espanol seems to have returned en force. Latin music is one of the fastest growing sectors in American music sales. Bad Bunny is slated to play the Super Bowl and killer garage-psych band, Los Blenders are coming to the 13th Floor in downtown Austin on Saturday. Tickets are still available for this underplay at the intimate Red River District venue.

When 13th Floor owner Jake Garcia (The Black Angels, The Ripe) first told us about Los Blenders, he knew TCC staff would love the garage rockers from Mexico City. Their sound is both familar and entirely foreign as their lyrics are written in Spanish. The music is universal though. On their 2023 hit single, “Lxs Vampirxs” booming drums are joined with bass, guitar and intoning vocals that combine garage-psych with what sounds like cutting-edge indie rock vocals. The song crescendos into madness then alternates into the chorus:
“Otra noche, otra fiesta, otra sombra y que (Lxs Vampirxs tienen sed) En un piso destruido, en el centro, súbele (Lxs Vampirxs te van a morder) Y que truenen esas bocinas, tiembla todo y yo también Soy Vampiro, he mordido, quiero sangre y qué”

If you haven’t already watched the clip above, you probably should. While we haven’t gotten to see this gifted act perform, their band bio makes us excited to see them live:
Beyond their recordings, Los Blenders have earned a reputation for their dynamic live performances, which have become a defining element of their success. They’ve graced some of the world’s most iconic stages, including Coachella, Vive Latino, Pal Norte, Teatro Metropólitan, and The Roxy, among many others. These live shows have not only showcased their energetic stage presence but have also elevated them as a must-see act, earning accolades from fans and critics alike.”

Hidden Ritual 2019What we do know, is Garcia wouldn’t have booked these guys if there weren’t a talented live band. Garcia has also sweetened the deal with an opening set by local psych rock outfit, Hidden Ritual led by musician and visual artist Jaime Zuverza. The Cosmic Clash are big fans. These days Zuverza doesn’t perform often, so it’s a real treat for local fans to catch a Hidden Ritual performance.

Garcia and bandmate, Christian Bland will also spin vinyl on Saturday evening, turning the iconic psych rock club into a late-night dance party on Saturday. Combine all that with kickass sound and lighting along with a welcoming bar staff and winning front patio and there’s zero reason you should stay home and watch SNL from your couch. This is the Live Music Capital of World. Go get you some fun and support independent live music.
