Live music review: Geordie Greep delivered memorable set at Austin Psych Fest
Accompanied with an ensemble band of instrumentalists, London’s Geordie Greep delivered a memorable set orbiting his solo LP debut The New Sound —released in October 2024— at South Austin’s Far Out Lounge on April 26 as part of Levitation and Resound’s Austin Psych Fest 2025. It was the group’s first APF performance.

Around 5 p.m., the former Black Midi frontman, donning a grey suit, started a soundcheck that could rival the setlist crescendo of many other bands. The immense talent of Greep on baritone guitar, Cameron Campbell on the keyboard, Charlie Sheft’s drumming, Santiago Moyano’ percussion, bass by Dave Strawn, and guitar by Ethan Marsh, were all obvious to the amped-up crowd.

The expansive-yet-intimate setting of the venue provided a near-perfect backdrop for Greep’s avant-garde soundscape. The audience was immersed in Geordie Greep’s electrifying performance, with the band’s dynamic instrumentation, proving their latest project is overwhelmingly entertaining. Fusing latin jazz, psych–art-rock, dusted with some swing, their unorthodox compositions stood out amongst APF performers. The energy coming from the stage was immense.

There was no shortage of theatrics throughout the set, as Geordie’s stage persona adapted to each individual number. His lively stage presence shifted with the energy of each song like a chameleon as he belted out commanding vocals. Extended jam-outs blended songs together. The set ended with an expanded rendition of “Holy, Holy.”

If you enjoyed listening to The New Sound, this performance would have lent a greater appreciation for Greep’s artistic approach and enthusiasm. If The New Sound record is not quite your bag, the British musician’s performance would have provided a deep respect for his originality, flair, and musical skill of the entire band. The talent, energy, and flat out jovial atmosphere of Geordie Greep’s set was undeniable. The cheering audience was full of impressed smiles and laughter.

Ultimately, Geordie Greep’s show felt as if it should have been later in the evening. The set demonstrated the artist’s aptitude for creativity and willingness to venture into uncharted musical soundscapes. This show perfectly embodied Levitation’s devotion to showcasing new, original and groundbreaking musical performers at the festival.
