Video Premiere: Exotic Fruitica continues release cycle with new track Cowboy
Austin noisemakers Exotic Fruitica are ramping up their upcoming EP release with a new track and video that pushes the band’s noisy antics to 11. For the Austin act, they’ve been releasing one song after another that always go the deafening distance. Choosing sun-baked hooks and fuzzy guitars to sculpt their catchy yet chaotic approach, the Austin noise act has been making a mission statement to rattle listeners into blown-out exhaustion. To celebrate the release of “Cowboy,” They have also dropped a video that embodies the same chaos that the music evokes. Directed by Cameron Kisel, Exotic Fruitica is quickly catching fire as one of Austin’s most exciting bands.
“It all started with my wife and I, Misti, who plays in the Austin psych rock band Daiistar. We bought the van, and she said, “Its name is Cowboy.” The track is about writing music and putting everything you have into the art. We put everything we have into our music, and I think this video is a representation of that. It’s also just a song about our van. You’re always giving all of yourself to everything, but soon you see more and more of yourself when you zoom further into what you’re trying to say. This record is about that, seeing what’s truly there beyond what meets the eye. We put everything we have into our music, and I think the video is representative of that,” says frontman Jon French about the upcoming release, Cruel which is due out August 10.
Since exploding onto the Austin scene as Exotic Fruits and releasing a handful of singles, the Austin noise rock act has since rebranded, announcing a new EP with all new music with b-sides that show the songs reworked by the likes of Blank Hellscape, Body Tape, and T H E H O a R D (members of Godshell) With French’s depraved bellows and drummer Aaron Gilligan’s punishing percussion, each new track pushes the boundaries of auditorial unbridled rage, and this new cut is no exception. The Nirvana-esque chord progression, along with the METZ-Gilla Band style vocals, bode well to make an extremist, impactful take on the post-punk genre, making for an aural experience that’ll make car listeners want to do donuts outside the city’s limits.
“We got to work with Ethan Billips, who plays in Blank Hellscape and has a solo project called Body Tape. He’s in the coffee industry, just like Aaron and I. Aaron is the head roaster at Try Hard Coffee in Austin’s East Side that I’ve been one of the owners of for a few years now. We sent them the stems and told them to go nuts, and it kind of just worked out.” French says.
The video accompanying this new track shows what Exotic Fruitica has been building up since manifesting this upcoming new release. The scenes in the video feature French and Gilligan traveling in their van, featuring the backdrop of the Central Texas Hill Country. The video showing the members of the band fueling the van with inflicted wounds whose blood fuels their rock-solid commitment to making their art in its best form possible.
Exotic Fruitica will release their new EP on Mr. Pink Records, owned and founded by Austin native Jonas Wilson of Austin’s act Heartless Bastards. Wilson has also been involved with Night Glitter, Chief White Lightning, My Jerusalem, and many more. The new tracks will be released on August 10 alongside a release show with the Austin punk act Pleasure Venom, a stacked bill featuring some of Austin’s fastest and loudest acts.
Catch Exotic Fruitica at Coral Snake in Austin on August 5 to celebrate the release of their new single. The bill features other Austin heavy-hitters, Castle Club, San Antonio’s Sex Mex, and Cheeky Orange. Exotic Fruitica also has dates planned for Volstead Lounge and Hotel Vegas on August 6 and 18, respectively. The Volstead Lounge gig is an exclusive performance of The Strokes’ classic album Is This It. The band has a noisy interpretation of the album planned for the performance, a special occurrence that will likely only happen once according to French. Exotic Fruitica also has a gig planned with hardcore punk supergroup OFF! on September 8 to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Austin’s 13th Floor venue on Red River. RSVP and grab tickets for that not-to-be-missed show before it’s sold out.

Cowboy Lyrics:
I’m Jealous of your combination tour
You Constantly roll in comfort luxury
And this is our time
And this is when
I’ll take me some, and turn a quarter turn
A cabin so full that you only wish you stood
If I could stand in the corner, Id jerk in the future Sun
across the city soil and this is what be done
Cowboy, I jerk in the future Sun
A quart of blood and this is how it runs
I quite enjoy it, running it into the ground
The RV park takes another quart of blood
Cowboy, runs on a quart of blood
Cowboy, jerk in the future Sun
