Song review: Austin Noise Pop act Daiistar announced new album, released new song

Texas act Daiistar is back in full psychedelic force. On new track “Star Starter,” the Austin band wastes little time in getting down to potent, psychoactive business. The reverb-drenched production released June 29 makes for a vision quest-type listen, allowing the listener to sit back and bask in the production magic of Alex Maas, frontman of Austin neo-psych legends, The Black Angels. Daiistar’s new single comes with an upcoming album engineered by James Petralli of White Denim at Radio Milk Recording Studio in Austin. The famed studio is a legendary space known to produce a prolific body of records that span all genres.

The new Daiistar cut provides an introspective listen, sculpting sounds of psychedelia while also visiting the realms of garage rock and shoegaze. Vocalist/guitarist Alex Capistran’s delivery pays heavy homage to the roots of psych rock, allowing Daiistar to explore a variety of influences that make them sound fresh and worthy rising members of Austin’s robust music scene. Coming off the release of their single “Tracemaker ” and a signing to London-based label Fuzz Club Records, Daiistar is gearing up for a bright future.

On the new single, Daiistar frontman Alex Capistran (guitar/vocals) notes: “I was messing with some congas on logic and accidentally dropped them into a track with a synthesizer plugin. When I played it back, it sounded great, and thought it was perfect for “Star Starter,” so I moved it into key, and that’s how the intro came to be. Kind of a serendipitous moment. Another good memory I have from those sessions is of Cornetti going full-speed on tambourine for a few takes. It was a marathon and quite entertaining to watch. We enjoyed making this song, and we’re happy to finally share it.”

The new track comes with the announcement of Daiistar’s new record, Good Time, which has been heavily teased and discussed in the Austin scene for quite some time. Since forming in 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Daiistar has been working hard to create a body of work as Austin’s next big rock act. With a tour with The Black Angels and indie legends The Dandy Warhols on the horizon, the group has much to look forward to in 2023.

On their upcoming debut, Capistran added: “To us, these songs were a glimmer of light. Starting a band at the peak of the pandemic to some might seem ill-timed, but to us, it was a way to escape for a moment. There was something to look forward to, and we kept our heads in the future. These songs guided us through some dark times, and hopefully, they can do the same for you. GOOD TIME is here.”

Good Time is due out Sept 8 via Fuzz Club Records. Catch Daiistar on tour with The Black Angels and The Dandy Warhols here:
