Song premiere: A Giant Dog (announces new album) Bite, shares new song

A Giant Dog Bite is coming. Wait. A Giant Dog has a new album called Bite on the way. The larger-than-life onstage personas of singer Sabrina Ellis and guitarist / vocalist Andrew Cashen have served as a magical concoction that has filled venues nationwide and spawned several side projects that reach immense levels of inspired eccentricity.

To cook things up for the Austin act’s next album, Bite, A Giant Dog has introduced fans to their present era with the release of new track “Different Than,” a song about struggling with one’s identity in the current tumultuous political climate. This album is more than two years in the making, resulting in a concept record that shows AGD fleshing out their own universe.

In 2020, the members of A Giant Dog traveled to La Cuve Studio, just outside of Angers, France, where they recorded their fifth studio album amid the Covid-19 pandemic. On new track “Different Than,” Ellis explores the challenges of self-identity, a personal journey from the minds of the long-running songwriting team.

“Within our previous albums, the subject matter, the lyrics are all very personal, based on our experiences—self-centered, even,” Ellis explains. “In making this conceptual album, we had to find ourselves within, or project ourselves into, the principal characters. We developed them, got to know their minds, emotions, and motivations, and then expressed those in nine songs. The songs aren’t demonstrative as in musical theater. Instead, the songs are heated moments, internal expressions that stand on their own.”

“Different Than” shows A Giant Dog going straight to work at what they do best. The glam rock-inspired punk throw-downs that the group has been cultivating for over a decade now appear as refined as ever, which includes Ellis’ signature misfit delivery along with Cashen’s melodic backing vocals remaining masterfully intact. The album features A Giant Dog’s classic lineup of Austin residents — Sabrina Ellis, Andrew Cashen, Danny Blanchard, Graham Low, and other guests the band met along the way in the production of the upcoming release.

Bite will be released on August 25 via Merge Records. The upcoming album can be pre-ordered on the Merge Records website here.
