Live music preview: Club X and Cosmic Clash presents Como Las Movies at 13th Floor Sunday

Sunday, Club X (Mas Music and Misti Watts) and The Cosmic Clash presents Como Las Movies at 13th Floor this Sunday, June 11 at 8 p.m. with Nemegata and Alex Cosmico with DJ Ed Gonzalez (Fading Yellow). The show is part of a monthly series at the Red River Cultural District venue hosted by Club X featuring cutting edge artists. This weekend’s performance highlights Latin fusion acts who employ Cumbia, psych rock, indie rock and funk in their music.

Como Las Movies Sabrina

Como Las Movies is coming off a banner year that saw the group perform at Austin City Limits Music Festival, get featured on NPR and perform with Sabrina Ellis at the Austin Music Awards last March. Rumor has it Ellis may make another appearance with the band Sunday. Besides guest performances, fans can look forward to CLM’s infectious beats and exceptional songwriting by bandleader Nelson Valente Aguilar. Aguilar has been a mainstay in the Austin music scene since his days with Maneja Beto over a decade ago. Como Las Movies has been featuring the song,”Café” on their latest record.

In an interview with KUTX’s Jeff McCord last year Aguilar stated, “Post-pandemic has been a whirlwind,” says Aguilar. ”I was planning to take a break from Como Las Movies and focus on dj-ing, since my singer decided to step away. I did not have any interest in having to search for a [new] singer. After a DJ gig with my drummer in Mexico City last December, he suggested that we should come back and play a gig. My response was, ‘What about a singer?’  He responds with a simple ‘You’.”

What we can tell you is Club X with Como Las Movies  is a performance worth seeing. And Aguilar on lead vocals is better than he might imagine. What is better than a songwriter delivering his own lines with the passion and intent the words were written with?

Nemegata band

Nemegata is a band The Cosmic Clash booked during one of our SXSW shows at Hard Luck Lounge several years ago. The trio fronted by Víctor-Andrés Cruz “El Guámbito” on lead vocals, electric guitar, synth and Colombian percussion. With César Valencia “I Nova” on bass, synth, Colombian percussion, and vocals. And Fabián Rincón “Don Fabo” on drums, synth drums, and vocals. The group is truly a pleasure to watch perform. Their musical prowess will impress the most discerning audiences.

Cruz and Nova also perform with Caramelo Haze which includes their record producer, Beto Martinez (Lechehouse Studios) on guitar. Martinez is also a member of Grupo Fantasma, Brownout and Money Chicha. The band is heavily influenced by their native Colombian traditions such as Cumbia, Bullerengue, Gaita music, Colombian Andean songs, as well as ’60s and ’70s mind-bending psychedelia from Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. This year, the group has been invited to perform at Austin City Limits Music Festival in October.

Alex Cósmico also appears on this bill. The Latina singer is based in Austin. The Colombian singer-songwriter has a band who creates music that celebrates the vibrant culture and natural beauty of their homeland. Their debut single, “Nefelibata,” is a perfect example of the band’s unique sound. Inspired by the sounds of a soccer stadium in Latin America, the song captures the energy and excitement of a live match, while also exploring themes of love and Argentinian culture.

DJ Ed Gonzalez of Latin psych act, Fading Yellow will wrap up the night with funky Latin beats that will keep fans dancing. Club X is sponsored by Drink Weird with support from The 13th Floor. Tickets are available in advance via Dice app or at the door on June 11 at 8 p.m. for $10. All ticket buyers must be 21+. RSVP to the event on Facebook here.
