Live music preview: September Austin shows are getting cooler with weather

September Austin shows are getting cooler along with the early wet and cooling trend the month ushered in. There are a ton of great live music shows coming to town such as The Killers with Johnny Marr and legendary Japanese psych rockers, Kikagaku Moyo at Far Out Lounge. Don’t sleep on local shows at FSG, Parish, Swan Dive and Far Out Lounge. Fall festival season is almost upon us. Limber up music fans, even more shows coming in October with ACL Festival and LEVITATION on tap.

  • September 5 – WHY? @ The Ballroom – WHY?’s Yoni Wolf experiments with spoken word and female vocals with chill guitar riffs. Give “Good Friday” a listen. Tickets

  • September 7 – Enter Shikari, Trash Boat, Aviva @ Mohawk – British rock group Enter Shikari released “Nothing is True and Everything is Possible” back in the spring. The rock group features heavy guitar, screamo, and pop punk vocals in the midst. Tickets

  • September 8 – Panic! At the Disco, Beach Bunny, and Jake Wesley Rodgers @ Moody Center – You don’t want to miss Panic! At the Disco at the Moody Center.  Tickets

  • September 9 – The Killers & Johnny Marr, Me Nd Adam @ Moody Theater at ACL Live – “Are we human or are we dancer? My sign is vital. My hands are cold.” The Killers have cemented themselves as pop-rock legends. The energy from the first several notes of “Mr.Brightside” at 1 a.m. is unrivaled. Legendary guitarist, Johnny Marr opening the show is icing on the cake. Marr is also appearing in San Antonio September 6 at Paper Tiger. Review and photos by Michael Maly coming soon. Tickets

  • September 9 – Feel So Good Records x Resound Presents – A free ass block party happening at Feel So Good Records with a stellar local lineup from Fat Tony,TC Superstar, Chroma, Clear Acid, Gus Baldwin and the Sketch, and Lord Friday the 13th. . Did we mention vintage vendors, flash tattoos, food trucks, flash tattoos, and free drinks from Hornitos, Rambler, Deep Eddy Vodka, and Nomadic Beerworks? This is a local September Austin show you don’t want to miss. RSVP here

  • September 10 – Of Montreal w/ 1, Locate S, Vonne @ The Mohawk – Of Montreal has hollowed a space in indie pop scene with bops like “Gronlandic Edit”, with vocalist, Kevin Barnes’ voice soaring to incredulous heights. The band’s costumes and staging are worth the ticket price alone. Think the indie rock version of Flaming Lips. This might be the coolest touring act in our September Austin show list. Tickets

  • September 10 – Vein.fm w/ Candy, Living Weapon, Regulate @ Parish – Progressive metal artist Vein.fm is our wild card pick of the month. Drum and bass beats to brooding ballads, this band’s discography covers a broad spectrum. Tickets

  • September 11 – Austin Hot Sauce Festival @ Far Out Lounge – The 32rd Annual Austin Hot Sauce Festival will raise money for the Central Texas Food Bank. While you try out different hot sauces and salsas, catch live performances by Luna Luna, TC Superstar, Mama Duke, and Kind Keith. Tickets

  • September 12 – Blue Monday @ Antone’s – Antone’s house blues band led by Derek O’Brien residency happens every Monday at Antone’s with rotating special guests. Tickets

  • September 13 – HAAM Day @ Various Venues – Health Alliance for Austin Musicians will take place live and in-person at participating venues to raise money and awareness for the first time since 2019. The event will feature local musicians. Since 2015, HAAM has raised more than $123 million for over 6000 Austin area musicians.

  • September 17 – Kikagaku Moyo @ Far Out Lounge – Kikagaku Moyo started in 2012 as a group of buskers in Tokyo. The group’s psychedelic-funk draws inspiration from classical Indian, the 70s, Krautrock, and traditional Folk. This is their last show in Austin as the band has decided to take an indefinite hiatus. Sold out. Check venue and secondary market for tickets. Tickets

  • September 18 – Far Out Yonder Fest @ Far Out Lounge – Check out full bands and acoustic sets inspired by the Texas Hill Country. The lineup includes Gus Clark, JD Clark, and The 501s. Tickets

  • September 18 – Resound Presents + Desert Door: Unreleased Showcase @ The Parish – Texas based bands compete in a battle of the bands. This is a great way to discover your new favorite band as you hit these September Austin shows. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to support Black Fret and Wild Spirit Wild Places. Tickets

  • September 19 – Steve Miller Band @ ACL Live – Calling all space cowboys, American classic rock band Steve Miller Band takes the stage at the Moody Theater. Tickets

  • September 21 – Roxy Music w/ St. Vincent @ Moody Center – Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members, Roxy Music returns for their first tour in a decade with Texas powerhouse St.Vincent for a glittery night at ACL Live. Tickets

  • September 22 –  Eagle Claw, Transit Method, Buzz Electro, MugDog @ Hotel Vegas – We will always encourage some weeknight debauchery at Hotel Vegas. This hard rock bill is for all you metalheads out there. Tickets available at the door.

  • September 23 – Itchy-O & Thor w Friends @ Far Out Lounge – Itchy-O, a collection of masked percussionists, will take the stage (or hell maybe the crowd) at the Far Out Lounge as part of Fantastic Fest’s musical programming. The avant-garde group fuses tight lined drum corp battery with taiko drums and synthesizers (among many in their army) to create a ceremonial, ritualistic experience Thor and Friends opens. If you’re looking for different and out-of-the-norm, this September Austin show is the ticket. Tickets

  • September 23 – Cheer Up Charlie’s – Come out to see what has become a rare occurrence in post-COVID CUC=land, a live rock show at Cheer Up Charlie’s featuring Night Cap, Flora & Fauna, Shooks, Baldie Loxx, and Paris Aden. Tickets available at the door.

  • September 24 – Fontaines D.C. w/ Wunderhorse – Historic Scoot Inn – Irish rock band Fontaines D.C. will be performing at Historic Scoot Inn. SOLD OUT. Tickets

  • September 24 – Khruangbin w/ Thundercat & Genesis Owusu @ Germania Amphitheater – Mellow out at the Grand Prix track listening to the instrumental stylings of Houston-based Khruangbin. The trio gained notoriety for their dusty, southwestern guitar sounds and groove to build up a psychedelic mood while managing to avoid being described characteristically as purely psych-rock. Thundercat continues to keep us in awe of his funky compositions, bringing his prodigious bass to be the limellight. Tickets

  • September 25 – King Khan and the BBQ Show & Miranda and the Beat @ Hotel Vegas – Perhaps y’all will recognize them from the happy go lucky sound that graced every TikTok influencers’ feed: “Love You So”. The vibe translates into each of the Canadian garage tracks, injecting doo-wop, but leaving the guitar parts grungy and unrefined. Check out track, “Going Down” to rival Wet Leg’s lyrical promiscuity. Tickets

  • September 27 – Lake Street Dive w/ Devin Gilfillian @ Stubb’s – This quintet blends the folk vocals of Rachael Price with soulful blues. The band released their album “Obviously” in 2021 and is on tour in support of the record. “Being A Woman” captures the frustrating double standards of identifying as female in today’s society. Tickets

  • September 29 – Red Rum Club w/ Holdfast @ The Ballroom – Red Rum Club is a vibrant indie pop group who released their album, “How to Steal the World” in 2021, during quarantine. The self-described “sexy-tet” tosses in brass for optimistic dance tunes. For fans of Ghostland Observatory. Tickets

  • September 30 – Bright Light Social Hour w/ Riders Against the Storm @ The Parish – David Dye of NPR’s World Cafe described the group as a combination of “psychedelic southern blues-rock aesthetics with danceable electronics.” We just love these local artist to death. This might be the best local September Austin show in our list this month. Hip hop duo Riders Against the Storm open. Ticket link

  • September 30 – Mas Music Records and Howdy Gals present @ Swan Dive – Another awesome rock lineup happening at Swan Dive including Glasshealer, an album release from Ladyfang, Exotic Fruits, and Blank Hellscape. Tickets

  • September 30 – Osees @ Hotel Vegas – Legendary garage punks Osees headline the back patio at East Austin’s epicenter of hipsterdom. Show is sold out per usual. Check venue social day of show for last minute tickets. The band is also slated to play four shows during LEVITATION Festival. There are still tickets available for those dates.
