Album review: UK post punks Yard Act set to release debut LP January 7

One of the latest bands to emerge through the thick of the post-punk movement of the modern day UK is Yard Act, a self-described, “minimalist rock group” based in Leeds, England. Their debut full-length record is set for release on January 7 next year.

With a series of impressive song releases on the resume, the quartet from the county of West Yorkshire appear set to cement a prominent spot on modern music with the release of their upcoming album, The Overload, set to see release in early 2022 through Zen F.C. records.

Formed in 2019, Yard Act released several singles in 2020, followed by the Dark Days EP in 2021. So far, only one song, the opening and title track from The Overload has been released by the band.

Consisting of vocalist James Smith, Sammy Robinson on guitars; drums by George Townend, and bassist Ryan Needham; Yard Act takes a satirical approach to commentary on various topics. It’s become a familiar theme per our review of Snapped Ankles among UK acts.

When Yard Act released their first single from the EP, “Trapper’s Pelts,” it became immediately apparent that their style is unique. The four rockers from Leeds are not comparable to any other band in our humble opinion. Their sound is yet another breath of fresh air from the thriving UK post-punk musical movement. It’s patently true that great art begets great art.

With their follow-up song, “Fixer Upper,” the band topped their initial release with a comical delivery… and continued to build on their sound with the third single, “Peanuts” which you can also hear below. While we’re not able to share the new material yet, the EP singles are a great reference point for discerning music listeners.

There is much to look forward to with the release of the Yard Act’s debut LP. The upstart band gives us a whole lot to look forward to in the near term. And since this will be the band’s debut full-length, their upside long-term is enormous.  Listeners will undoubtedly find the distinctive sound of Yard Act to be a candid and fresh introduction to the UK post-punk scene at the dawn of the new year. Let’s hope 2022 has better plans than 2021 did for us.
