Live music preview: Christian Bland and the Revelators wrap Vancerts Sunset Saturdays July 31

Christian Bland (The Black Angels) returns to Native Hostel Saturday, July 31 this time with a full band, the Revelators to headline the final Vancerts Sunset Saturdays until the series resumes September 4. Moving Panoramas and Semihelix round out a stellar psych-rock / shoe-gaze bill. Bland opened the series with a rare, solo set in April.

With COVID-19 numbers spiking in the Austin area along with the rest of the country, the Sunset Saturdays series offers a safe way to enjoy live music while maintaining proper social distancing. The shows take place in Native’s backyard, with the Austin skyline as the backdrop. Typically the events feature vintage vendors, live art and complimentary Big Swig water for advance ticket buyers. A full cash bar, kitchen and food trucks are also available to concertgoers at Native. A limited number of VIP tickets for the event are available, sponsored by Fistful of Bourbon whiskey. Besides whiskey specials, VIP ticket holders get access to cool Fistful swag, Big Swig water and hard seltzer.

Headliners Christian Bland and the Revelators are among The Cosmic Clash’s favorite neo-psych rock bands. Featuring Black Angels lead guitarist on vocals with TBA bassist Ramiro Verdooren on drums and Angels guitarist Jake Garcia on bass, the powerful threesome combine Bland’s Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd sounds with sounds similar to Jesus and Mary Chain and Primal Scream. The result are some truly great songs. Check our favorite CB record, The Unseen Green Obscene and you’ll hear what we mean.

After previewing this new Revelators lineup at Hotel Vegas earlier this month, we can guarantee folks who end up at Native on Saturday are in for a treat. When you add Leslie Sisson’s’ Moving Panoramas to the bill along with the female-fronted Semihelix you end up with a pretty damn great bill. Panoramas’ shoe-gazey, cosmic cowboy brand of rock always hits us right in the feels. It’s debatable which record is better, MP’s incredible debut or their follow-up, In Two. That said, Moving Panoramas’ live shows are even better than those excellent recordings.

The icing on this cake is Austin trio, Semihelix. Led by Guitarist and vocalist, Geannie Friedman, this act makes entirely appealing shoe-gaze / psych rock. Their new album due out in October promises to be a great one. We’ve already gotten a sneak peak at the full LP and can confirm. Check their second single and title track, “Recoil” below.
