Live music preview: Black Syrup to debut Vancerts concept at FSG

In the era of rare live performances amid a world-wide pandemic, creative approaches to presenting live music have not only presented themselves (live streams, drive-in shows) in a myriad of formats. Music industry professionals like Austin native, David Castro went from booking 50-100 shows a year for his fledgling, Bird Barn Booking Company to wondering if work as a line cook was something he’d have to return to. But then, like a bolt of lightning, the Vancerts concept came to him in the form of an informal, mobile live performance at Fine Southern Gentlemen on December 4.

Vancerts is basically a self-contained show in van. Castro has even rigged the van with a professional grade generator capable of powering a live show on it’s own. Vancerts even has it’s own backline and production equipment due to it’s association with Bird Barn. The bootstrapped concept has captured the attention of music industry locals including Yayo Sanchez.

You may remember Yayo from his surprise guitar solo with Foo Fighters out at Austin360 Amphitheater a few years ago. The Fighters’ Dave Grohl couldn’t stop talking about the upstart musician with the audacity to lay down a wicked solo with some of his musical heroes. He’s part of a garage rock duo, Black Syrup who will perform at Vencerts’ inaugural event at Fine Southern Gentlemen December 4. Vancerts will be giving away a Koloss (Japan) custom guitar signed by Yayo. FSG is also hosting food trucks, an art raffle with an open bar courtesy of Tito’s Vodka. Fans can enter to win by grabbing a raffle ticket here or at the event. Vancerts will also have a some surprise giveaways and swag to take home.

Castro wanted us to remind you to wear a mask if you come, wash your hands frequently and social distance from folks so that all in attendance can feel safe. There will be plenty of room to see the show and watch skaters ride. To support local musicians fans can visit SIMS Foundation and donate to a local non-profit that provides mental health and recovery services to Austin music industry members. Their work is vital to our creative sector. Please consider supporting the valuable work SIMS does for our artists.
