Song Premiere: Jacob Shipman drops debut single tomorrow
When our in-house, local music fan girl, Sonya Hernandez reached out to let us know The Cover Letter’s Jacob Shipman was releasing solo material we jumped at the chance to premiere his new song, “Counting Mistakes” at The Cosmic Clash this week. Our event production arm, Cosmic Clash Presents has booked The Cover Letter for shows in part due to Shipman’s vocal talent and charismatic stage presence. The man knows how to put on a show. And he knows how to write a good song as evidenced by his latest work.
With his band on indefinite hiatus due to the devastating impact, Shipman set out to heal through the catharsis of songwriting. “For me personally, it’s been a long time since I have gone without playing shows, and it started to wear on me. I took this time to self-assess and really look inwards at what I wanted, who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do. With every obstacle comes another opportunity. I am a therapeutic type of songwriter and I put my real-time feelings down on paper to keep myself sane. Quarantine offered me a chance to step out of the norm and write songs from a much more intimate and vulnerable perspective, something I think everyone can relate to right now,” the singer commented.
The lyric that hit home for us is this one: “…treading water, yearning for solid ground.” The words concisely convey how most of us are feeling in the uncertainty that the pandemic brings. The tune is lovely, displaying the raw emotion of Shipman’s voice along with thoughtful, honest lyrics that underline the swirl of emotions artists (really all of us) are experiencing as their jobs are threatened and live music slows to a trickle of shows in Austin. It’s a strange time to be alive. “Counting Mistakes” painfully and perhaps optimistically (beautiful art created) illustrates our collective feelings.
The track officially drops tomorrow but you can stream it here today and buy it tomorrow over at Shipman’s artist link page which offers the song on all the major music platforms.
