Video Premiere: Dena Hope returns with DIY clip Stay

Electronic, dark wave, independent artist, Dena Hope returns today with a brand new video for her pop song “Stay.” The clip which premieres exclusively at The Cosmic Clash draws inspiration from the 90s heyday of MTV with the likes of Fiona Apple. With the COVID-19 pandemic still looming, perhaps we all need the lighthearted tone of Austin artist, Hope’s new dark wave dance-pop tune?

Following up on the release of her EP In Transit, Hope worked with local producer Samara Simpson to make a remarkably professional looking clip for a production comprised of two artists in quarantining-in-place in Hope’s living room in Austin. Hope appeared in the video by herself, highlighting her vulnerability in the context of the song. Hope co-wrote the song with don Cento.

“I wanted to convey the song’s loneliness and emotional qualities through moody lighting, glitchy edits, and close frame shots of Dena’s eyes and face to tell her story,” Simpson said.

The track has a good tempo for an electronically-powered ballad, employing a healthy dose of digital drum tracks with layers of synth backing Hope’s delicate vocal delivery. As she put it, “making the video put me out of my comfort zone” while expanding her visual scope. Hope says she ended up having a good time making the video with Simpson.

Hope plans to release a new single “Stuck” that was written, produced, mixed, and mastered in the months since the city shut down. The 80’s inspired darkwave post-apocalyptic anthem was produced by Mason Ables of Flora & Fawna and will be released in September 2020.
