Song Premiere: Stiletto Feels hot new single I Wanna Break It

It’s been five years since Austin musician Geoff Earle released his debut album, The Big Fist as Stiletto Feels to critical acclaim. The Austin act makes a triumphant return, premiering hot new single “I Wanna Break It,” the second single from their upcoming Push Back, today at The Cosmic Clash. The new record is set for release on October 2 with a host of guest performers. Aaron Perez of Ume, Ryan Figg of The Octopus Project, Bryan Richie of The Sword, Jimmy Vela of Think No Think all contribute to Stiletto Feels’ sophomore album.

In late 2015, the Austin five piece released their debut LP, The Big Fist, to high critical praise from the likes of KUTX and Texas Monthly. Earle took a decidedly different approach to recording, multiple studio players improvised over demo tracks after a single listen. The pieces were then stitched together over a few short months at multiple studio locations. . The group followed the release with a slew of staggering live performances, highlighted by their performance at SXSW in 2016 with fellow Austinites, The Octopus Project and Golden Dawn Arkestra.

In the midst of a looming pandemic, Stiletto Feels managed to complete the recording of their upcoming release. In such an anxiety-driven, frustrating time, this track serves as the perfect vessel for positive distraction and mood enhancer.

This first single released for Push Back, “That’s Gonna Leave A Mark,”  was recorded and edited while in quarantine as was its music video. The tune addresses the overbearing themes of the pandemic adeptly.

This second release from the upcoming album opens with what can best be described as a funky amalgam of rapid-fire, up-and-down guitar notes and breakbeat drums.  Earle’s vocals soon dominate the hook-laden intro with a sound reminiscent of The Talking Heads.

The instrumentation intensifies with layers of synth and even marimba.  There is a lot going on in the song, in which the chorus, “why every time I see something nice, I wanna break it…” adds an entrancing layer of light-hearted, dance-inducing humor and a passionate sense of desperation.

The song comes in at a concise 3:26 of post-punk, synthy funk. The track is an auspicious indicator of great music that lies ahead from Stiletto Feels.
