Live music review (photos): Ghostland Observatory’s Halloween party in Austin
Last Thursday music fans celebrated Halloween with Austin’s Ghostland Observatory at Carson Creek Ranch. The celebrated electronic dance duo performed with Fort Never and DJ Chicken George in front of approximately 1000 people. A good portion of those attendees wore outlandish costumes for the occasion. We’ve included images taken by The Cosmic Clash photographer David Castaneda of the spectacle, fans and fun things to do at the ranch which sits across the highway from Austin-Bergstrom Airport.
Despite record low temperatures, Ghostland devotees made their way to the grounds in near-freezing weather to hear the group perform with trademark lazers and the set pieces created for recent album tour, See You Later, Simulator. The concentric, LED-lighted triangles on the set framed lead singer and guitarist, Aaron Behrens while a caped Thomas Ross Turner produced electronic sounds and beats behind his frenetic band mate on a raised platform. Behrens’ high-octave vocal style fits perfectly amid the cacophony of sounds coming from Turner’s electronic music station.
The performance marked the first time the group has played Austin since their Mohawk showcase during South by Southwest. Despite the lack of live, local performances, the band was on point, delivering a scintillating set that featured music from their most recent release. Set highlights include, “Codename Rondo” the title track to Ghostland’s 2010 album. Hit “Sad Sad City” made it’s usual appearance as did “Glitter” from the same 2010 album. The song’s inclusion was appropriate as fans had the opportunity to be “glitter bombed” at a photobooth set up on site.
The 90-minute show featured an exceptionally mind-bending laser light show that played around those triangular set pieces we mentioned earlier. Check out this video below to get a glimpse of what fans experienced last week.
The group heads out on the road this month with three dates on the West Coast before heading to Colorado for shows in Aspen and Denver before returning home to Texas for the holidays. Grab tickets to a show in your area here.
