Album review: Soulfiya’s ‘Bush Doctor’ featuring El Dusty EP

Musical artist Soulfiya in collaboration with the Grammy-nominated artist El Dusty was released on the conspicuously marijuana-related date of 4/20. The Caribbean/Cumbia-influenced Bush Doctor EP features a powerful dub-reggae undertone that makes your bones rattle and your eyeballs shake when the PA is turned up even a little bit.

Frequent touring and bookings in Mexico led Soulfiya to playing Cumbia. The group noticed the similarities between reggae and dance-hall with the rhythms of Africa being the common ground.

Soulfiya began performing and recording well over a decade ago in Riverside, California. He is an influential veteran of the American reggae scene.  His accomplishments include being featured on a Billboard Reggae Top 10 album (Champion Sound by Skillinjah) and gracing thei Tunes Top 50 with his solo releases “Reality”(#44) and “One” (#16).

Fiya’s music blends reggae, dance-hall, dub and hip-hop to create a raucous, high-energy show that keeps his crowds excited and dancing to his relentless beats. To date, he has performed in 39 states and 4 nations with countless contemporary and legendary reggae icons.

Bush Doctor was recorded in February 2019 at El Dusty’s Produce Studios in Corpus Christi, Texas. The heavy Latin/Cumbia influence makes this release significantly different than the rest of Soulfiya’s catalog.

“Working with El Dusty definitely made the project exceptional and stand out from the rest of my work,” says Soulfiya.
The title of the EP “Bush Doctor”is a term for a practitioner of herbal folk medicine. It is also the title of a song on the EP which deals with the realities of treating a cancer patient illegally with cannabis oil.
