Live music preview: Special Free Week show at Velveeta Room takes place January 2

The Cosmic Clash has successfully produced Free Week events in the past, but this year we wanted to try something new and different. So we partnered with Music Firsthand’s Comedians Interviewing Musicians and booked a super fun lineup that takes place at The Velveeta Room on Sixth Street January 2. Austin acts Bear on Bear, The Mystery Achievement and Mohawk Bends will be joining the fun along with our comic hosts, the hilariously lovely BeckiJo Neil of Esther’s Follies and the snide commentary of Zac Brooks. The live-streamed show will feature a short interview with each act then a set of great live music by our musical guest. Grab a free spot at the show by sending your Eventbrite RSVP in here.

In curating our lineup we revisited a couple acts we’ve worked with over the past year. Self-described lyrical indie rockers, Bear On Bear bring a sophisticated, mature sound to indie rock that features layers of synth and guitar over a compelling rhythm section that often moves fans to dance to the hypnotic beat. Just as easily, the band can downshift to subtler material that sucks the listener in further. We think viewers and the lucky few who make into The Velveeta Room’s intimate space will become instant fans of this band if they’re not already. In case you didn’t catch that, arrive early to the venue next week if you’d like to secure a comfy seat inside the show.

Our openers are just as accomplished as the headliners. The Mystery Achievement’s self-titled full-length album was produced by prolific Austin record producer, Chris “Frenchie” Smith at his The Bubble studio last year. It’s a satisfying rock album featuring the type of harmonized female lead vocals that make our hearts melt with admiration. The group is technically sound as well, making guitar riffs that stick with the audience long after the performance is done. We’re excited TMA is returning to The Cosmic Clash fold with this upcoming party.

Mohawk Bends just announced their Spotify audience has grown considerably. We can see why. The foursome from Austin plays indie rock with a straightforward approach that works well for the group. Anyone who still claims guitar rock is dead just isn’t listening to what’s out there in our humble opinion. You can decide for yourself next week at The Velveeta Room.
