Song Review: The Cuckoos reveal eclectic new track Dirty Pictures

Kenneth Frost has proven to be a hometown prolific mastermind. Since performing as a part of Grandmaster, Sexpop, and his brainchild band, The Cuckoos, it’s mind-boggling to wonder how the Austin musician manages his time. On new track “Dirty Pictures,” Frost shows that his musical staying power is here to stay in the Austin scene. The song was released May 24. The band’s sound takes an eclectic route, showing touches of funk, soul, psychedelic rock, and the roots of classic rock.

Frost’s tenure in Austin has lasted his lifetime. He is no stranger to the stage, with multiple releases, band crossovers, and multiple star-studded local shows under his belt. Those appearances include the highly-anticipated new LP from mega ensemble Grandmaster, who just celebrated their album release at the Paramount Theater earlier in May with Nolan Potter’s Nightmare Band and Dodo. The Cuckoos also just wrapped a month-long residency at Austin music scene favorite East Side haunt Hotel Vegas, with every week’s performance featuring a different set of openers each Tuesday of May.

“Dirty Pictures” is a testament to the high-energy funk exploration that is a hallmark of The Cuckoos’ live performances. The pulsating bass and the four-on-the-floor drumbeat that kicks in at the start of the track is a head-bobbing invitation to join in the musical journey, accompanied by Frost’s soulful, deep vocal delivery. The band’s live shows, a four-piece act, are known for their energetic stage presence, showcasing a wealth of local talent and creating a dance-club-ready atmosphere.

This first release is just a taste of what’s to come from this local act. The highly-anticipated EP, produced by the renowned Chris “Frenchie” Smith of The Bubble Studios, is set to feature full-band and solo performances from Frost’s live ensemble and other talented musicians. The excitement is palpable as we await this next musical chapter from Kenneth Frost and his band.
