Live podcast review: The Danny Brown Show and Hannibal Buress celebrated 100 episodes
Detroit-turned-Austin rapper Danny Brown has been hosting podcast The Danny Brown Show with YMH Studios since the emcee’s big move to the Austin, Central Texas area. For Brown’s 100th episode after a whole year on the air, the rapper-comedian-host took to the vibrant local comedy club The Creek And The Cave for a celebration. Such a momentous occasion for fans of the podcast and Brown’s musical output alike, the host enlisted the help of fellow comedian/actor/rapper Hannibal Buress, who has recently started going by his musical moniker Eshu Tune. The duo released the collaborative single “Veneers” last year with Paul Wall, strengthening the pair’s bond.
Upon entering the venue, guests were shown to their tables, and they were anxiously eyeing the comedy stage to see what the Saturday afternoon had in store. The Creek And The Cave stays true to its name, with the stage featuring a taxidermy bear on the backdrop. Before Danny took the stage, the audience was treated to early footage of The Danny Brown Show, which included the podcast’s producers giving Danny material to react to, showing the Detroit native’s ability to react, respond, and expand on any subject matter thrown at him. It’s no wonder that Brown’s podcast has stretched to 100 episodes and will continue on its hilarious and exciting trajectory.
When Buress and Brown took the stage, it was off to the races. While celebrating 100 episodes, Brown was also celebrating his first year of sobriety, which began with a stint in rehab after an explosive performance at last year’s edition of South By Southwest. The afternoon Austin crowd showed audible support for him, a warm moment in celebrating the artist finding a remarkable niche in the Austin community. The crowd also had the chance to interact with the duo for an audience Q and A session, allowing Danny and Hannibal to comment on questions stemming from Brown’s wacky, but worthwhile content during his tenure as a beloved podcast host.
The taped podcast contained several segments, including the subject wheel spin, in which a virtual wheel is spun, and a topic is chosen for discussion. Topics include Thailand, Sex Kung Fu, and even a Danny and Hannibal Freestyle, which resulted in an Austin, Texas-related rap session from Eshu Tune, showing off his improvised bars. Buress even commented during the taping that his comedy career has gone hand-in-hand with his Hip Hop career, allowing him to drown the haters and noise out by “Just dropping the beat.”
The taping also featured a video cameo from YMH Studios owner Tom Segura, congratulating Danny on 100 episodes. The move to Austin has proved successful for the former Michigan resident. Now that he’s fresh off new acclaimed releases, Quaranta and Brooklyn experimental rap powerhouse JPEGMAFIA collaborative effort Scaring The Hoes, things have never looked brighter for Danny Brown and his fellow creative partners. The afternoon ended with a never-before-seen music video showing Buress’ Eshu Tune release “I Lift Weights.” The video also featured a cameo from Buress’ former Comedy Central Broad City co-star Ilana Glazer. It’s fitting that Buress plays a dentist on the former hit comedy show and has a song called “Veneers.”
The Hannibal Buress installment of The Danny Brown Show will air on April 19 on YouTube, Google Podcasts, and Apple Podcasts via YMH Studios.
