Video Premiere: Como Las Movies releases entrancing new video for single featuring Sabrina Ellis
Austin Latin fusion act Como Las Movies have released their music video to accompany single “La 6,” released late last year featuring revered Austin singer Sabrina Ellis of A Giant Dog. The release also comes with singles compilation, Como Las Singles, available on Try Hard Ltd Vinyl today, January 26.
Since forming in 2012 with a gig at Austin, Latin staple Flamingo Cantina with Cumbia outfit Grupo Fantasma, Como Las Movies has been a staple in the World Music genre sphere of the Austin music scene. The Austin group has been described as “Cumbia-Synth,” with notes of psych-rock bliss that allow for Latin-Folk mannerisms while still having a trippy, rock-n-roll edge. After playing the Honda Stage at Austin City Limits Festival in 2022, Como Las Movies has kept its triumphant path a reality, playing venues all over town and attaining a multi-genre crossover fan following through countless live shows.
A Giant Dog/Sweet Spirit leader, Sabrina Ellis, takes a ride with Como Las Movies frontman and chief songwriter Nelson Valente Aguilar on this track. Ellis’ operatic, Spanish-language vocal delivery is immaculate, and the singer’s contribution rounds out the track’s natural beauty. Guatemala City, Guatemala-based motion video animator Oscar Donado directs the video accompanying the track. The imagery depicted in the footage shows psychedelic depictions of Ellis and the Austin act, with rapidly changing colors that paint the universe and beyond in a beautiful portrait.
McAllen-born, turned Austin musician, Aguilar has been hard at work in his musical journey since playing music at the age of 13; coming from a community where musical instruments were scarce, Aguilar worked with the materials he had available to craft his musical ambitions into a tooth-and-nail fought reality. The pairing of Ellis and Aguilar at the Austin Music Awards last year prompted an invitation from the band to Ellis to record on the current record. It also turned out that the pair has family members from the same Monterrey town in Northern Mexico and that Ellis has a passionate, refined talent for singing in the Spanish they learned from their grandmother in Mexico. Como Las Movies also performed a superb Studio 1A session with local radio station KUTX featuring Ellis, a beautiful representation of some of the best talent in the Austin music scene.
You can purchase the Como Las Movies singles compilation, Como Las Singles, here. Catch Como Las Movies making their debut at new Southeast Austin venue Radio/East on Saturday, February 3. The evening’s bill will also feature Austin Indie Latin Pop artist Chico Selfie and Sofrito Y Su Melao, an ensemble group known for their fusion of Cuban, Latin, and Salsa music to kick off the evening.
