Music video premiere: SATALiGHTS “Sirenas” drops today

SATALiGHTS is an Austin-based band that originated in 2013 through the collaboration of Alex Scott (guitar/vocals) and Mark Romano (drums). In 2018, the lineup expanded to include Rudy Rivera (guitar/synth) and Joseph Gardner (bass), solidifying their presence as vital contributors to the vibrant indie rock scene in Austin. SATALiGHTS are set to premiere their latest single and music video titled “Sirenas” today at The Cosmic Clash. This release follows their November 2020 album Little Star, which made our Best Austin Albums list that year. The music video will be accessible on the group’s YouTube channel, and in addition to the premiere, The Cosmic Clash will stream the video on Twitch and Facebook between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m.

In a departure from their usual shoegaze/alt-rock style, “Sirenas” explores a cultural theme that holds significance for Mexicano members Scott and Rivera. The song merges the traditional rhythms of Cumbia with modern elements, including synths and electronic sounds. This fusion results in a unique musical experience that showcases the band’s creativity and versatility while reflecting their Latin roots.

The “Sirena” music video follows a Latin protagonist as he readies himself for an adventurous day. His journey unfolds through the vibrant streets of Austin, where he engages with intriguing individuals. Each scene is carefully set in iconic Mexican-American locations within Austin, including the Fiesta grocery store, La Mexicana bakery, La Perla bar, a Loteria mural, and even in front of a sign that reads, “chicas bonitas”. Upon closer examination, it becomes evident that these characters are none other than the members of SATALiGHTS.

The color palette employed during the band’s performance in the clip is reminiscent of the vibrant hues commonly found throughout Mexico. Notably, the teal-colored walls and a guitar played by a mermaid contribute to this vivid imagery. The music video’s direction is credited to the accomplished Austin-based artist and video director, TVheadATX, known for their award-winning work on behalf of local and national acts.

The song Sirena shows a different side of SATALiGHTS which has taken a wide turn from their traditional sound. It shows that the band has expanded on the  SATALiGHTS sound. We can’t wait for future releases and their forthcoming new album! It will most definitely be awesome if this video is any indication.

The Sirena music video will be streamed on The Cosmic Clash Twitch Channel and Facebook, from 1 to 5 p.m. central today.
